Pin box stuff

Just for grins, I made up a jig so I could jack up the Monty at the pin box in order to measure frame flex. Trailer is pretty new. After getting a measurement with a square and additionally with a laser level, I emailed the dealer from whom I purchased the trailer and asked how much flex was acceptable. He had never been asked that question before, however he said he would find out. Now this is all email stuff. He asked his local rep. He had not heard of that before, so he asked the factory if they knew what this guy was talking about. The answer from who I believe worked at the factory, was 1/2 inch is acceptable, should it increase to beyond that then it should be inspected by the dealer or the factory. Thats my story and I'm sticking to it. Hope this is helpful to others.

We each get our on take on this, right??

They fixed ours, and believe me, it was not moving 1/2 inch. Ours, was, in their opinion, border line, our measurement was about 1/8th of an inch.

If it is moving 1/2 inch on the outside, I sure would hate to think about what it is doing on the inside. GULP!!!

Cannot remember what other MOC members have stated their gap was before the fix was applied, I am sure they will check in.

ole dude,

So how much flex did you have when you measured yours?

I would buy 1/2" if you are measuring from the pin itself, as the pin box deflection accounts for most of that.

However, as far as actual frame deflection, I'm with Carol...1/2" is too much for me. We had 1/8" to 1/4" movement at the lower molding on our older unit, and that got us a free invite back to the factory for repair.

Brad

Thank you for making that more clear than my post. Our gap at the place you describe was 1/8th, give or take.

It was NOT at the pin itself.

(I appologize, my thoughts are not totally clear today.)

Ours was a 1/4" at the molding and the dealer fixed it for us free of charge. The unit was 3 years old when we had it repaired.

I have measured the area again and both times the measurement has been 7/16 of an inch. This was taken at the outside turn up of the pin box close to the tow vehicle. Have seen no movement at any seams or gaps or cracks. I just wanted a reference point from the git-go.
