Rusting hot water tank drain opening

I believe the inside of the hot water tank is glass lined, but the drain opening is steel metal and not aluminum or stainless steel so it rusts. Has anyone found a product that can be applied to the threads on the drain opening that would
prevent rust, or can the drain opening be replaced.

I appreciate your feedback.

The threads on the anode should be wrapped with Teflon tape, per the instructions in the Suburban manual. That will prevent the seizure of the anode threads in the tank fitting. You must be careful using anything not rated for use on potable water systems. If the threads become damaged or so bad that you can not thread a new anode into the tank, a 3/4" plumbing tap can carefully be used to clean up the threads.

I use 1 of these:

I've even cut the plastic handle off and put the wire end into the drill and cleaned the threads that way.
