2008-2010 ford diesel
just got through replacing my 6.4 with a remanufactured 6.4 ! ouch !! over $ 20,000. k to have it done. Fords better idea. Cab has to be lifted off the frame. If you have one of these and the engine hasn't gone south yet, get rid of it!!! All maintaince was done with loving care. just saying. there was a reason they only keeped this engine for a few yrs.

Ouch is right. But other than poor fuel mileage haven't heard about a lot of problems with the 6.4. How many miles on it before it decide to croak?

These trucks were built to take the cab off. It's quicker and easier to take the cab off to do a major repair. I removed the DDF and EGR from mine to elimate two problem areas, then tuned it to make it a more fun truck.
What happened to your engine? Did the EGR go bad and flood the engine with coolant? Did the oil get too much fuel in it and wipe the hearings out? I had 13% fuel in my oil before I did removed the DPF.

The 6.4 is sure as heck better than the 6.0 liter but they still have their well documented problems Especially the 2008 model year but they got better and are a pretty dang good motor and alot of folks love them and then Ford Finally gave up on International and went in house in 2011 with the 6.7

Same as Richfaa. Only major problem was back in 09 I had a main bearing oil leak, but it was fixed without removing thecab, and only minor stuff since. I have kept up with ESP, and should be covered until time to sell.

We are kicking around the idea of a new truck. This 08 has been a good truck with no major issues and only minor things. We have had it for 8 years now and I like new trucks...... maybe....

For what it is worth, our 2011 Ford 6.7 dually has never been in the shop except for a coolant additive check. Absolutely trouble free. I did install airbags myself, necessary to keep the rear end level when towing.

100,300 miles when injector melted #2 piston . The cost to pull both heads and tear down the engine was fast approching the cost of remanufactured complete engine .First problem was at 95,000 mi. when high pressure fuel pump went out. fords better idea of taking the cab off to do any major work should go back to the drawing board !! Can you say tilt cab ? The labor alone was 6 K !!! I have been a ford man for years , but they have lost me as far as buying another truck.

The Ford flat rate manual bills the cab removal at 1 hour (which any qualified mechanic can do in under 30 minutes). There are 8 bolts and 6 wire disconnects to undo and the cab lifts straight off. Try reaching any of the heads or other major engine components with the cab still on. It is almost impossible.

When the HPFP went out were all of the injectors replaced? If not that IS the problem.
You can change brands but that may not solve the problem. They all have these have these HPFPs. My neighbor has a DMAX that exactly the same thing happened to. If you don't know an injector is leaking it will happen to any truck. I monitor my fuel pressure. Idling my pressure should be about 5800 pounds. If it should go lower there would be a problem that could be a leaking injector. It could be the fuel filter or something else. I have up graded the fuel filters. They are at least 5 times larger than stock and are rated at 2 microns.

Not to hijack, but Lynwood what are you using to monitor your fuel pressure, and do you believe that monitor can be preventative? Would you get enough warning that you have problems before it creates damage, or is it simply telling you that you have the damage?

Paul I don't know if I could detect a problem before there was any damage especially if you were on the road. Pulling my camper the fuel pressure runs at
20,000 pounds or so. And how long it would take to cause damage I don't know. I would hope I would see some sign something was amiss before I burnt a hole in a piston. Maybe fuel pressure varying out of normal or maybe lower than normal at idle. I don't think you could detect a problem while you are on the road. Fuel pressure just varies too much. It can be 5000 pounds one second and 20,000 pounds the next second.
That is what I would hope. I know what it cost if you don't find it and that is what the much better than stock filters are for and why I watch it so close.

Maybe I wasn't clear, the 6K was for all the labor not just for pulling off the cab, it just added more to that labor cost! Sorry for the confusion .

Pulling the cab made the no go faster so it didn't make it more expensive. All of this work can be done with the cab on but it takes longer.

There are a number of utube videos on the web showing how quickly the cab can be removed and how much easier it makes engine work. It was designed for that purpose.

Drove and pulled with my old F250 7.3 for over 200,000 miles and never a problem. Now have a new 2015 F250 and have 30,000 on it and running great, what a horse. Have 440 HP and 860 ft. Lbs torque. Also the 2015 F250 is the first year with the exhaust brake and it is great. Only thing I have added is air bags and a Line X bed liner.
