New Spammer 11/4/10

Received a spam email this am from a supposed MOC member "geo123". See he has a join date of today and is from the Ivory Coast. Wonderful. Don't open it if you get it.

Clyde-- I just posted a Warning under the General section of here also on this guy! He is good and very quick! Hope the administrators or moderators can take care of this. Unfortunately, this scum bag has already gotten address from MOC . I am also turning it into the FCC. I've had this same scam email sent to me before and sent it in and never received another until now but it's under a different name and etc.

The e-mail function of the MOC Forum does NOT expose the recipient's e-mail address to the sender. Even though s(he) was able to e-mail you, s(he) is unaware of your e-mail address.

Send a message via MSN to Art-n-Marge Send a message via Yahoo to Art-n-Marge
Now knowing this, the rogue member must have become a member then manually sent email one at a time just perusing the membership list. I wonder what criteria was used. My member name starting with "A" (art-n-marge) would have put me near the top alphabetically, but other users reporting that they got this are all over the alphabet. I wish I knew.

THANKS MOC moderators for trying to minimize the impact!!!!!!!

This is a classic "419 advance fee fraud" e-mail which originated in West Africa. They send out millions of e-mails to addresses they have obtained on the internet, often from forums like the MOC. They rely on a very small percentage of people replying to the e-mail and then getting caught up in the scam. I see by the moderators comments that the scammer will not actually have access to our e-mail addresses. For more information on this type of scam check out www.scamorama.com. Many people have lost their life savings to these low lifes.

Don't feel alone. His e-mail was sent to me at Thu 11/4/2010 2:33 AM and it wasn't delivered to my e-mail system until Thu 11/4/2010 9:29 PM.

He was (and still is) locked out. You can look at the Member entry and you will see a padlock icon next to his MOC name. I would suspect he flooded the MOC e-mail server with 6,000+ e-mails in a very short time and it took a (long) while to get them all processed and SMTP'd out to the real world.

I would like to see one of those emails that he sent. It is very possible that he harvested the email addresses and then "spoofed" the address. You would have to look at the complete headers to see where it came from.

Hey Wayne send me your e-mail address and I will be happy to share my copy of the fabulous money making opportunity. I take it you missed out of this deal?

I thought about him hacking into the system and accessing the e-mail address data directly but I don’t think that is what happened. If he had the raw e-mail addresses he would send directly to them from his yahoo account. But all the e-mails came from the MOC e-mail function. So he used our service and the only (and easiest) interface is the “e-mail a member function”.

These guys are not usually hackers cracking into systems. They are however, highly proficient with scripting tools. Most forums like the MOC are pretty similar in function. You sign up for a membership and then you have total access to the resources. It is pretty easy (using the MOC forum as an example) to write a script that: clicks on the “Member” option on the top of the screen, wait for the list of ids, parse each id, send that id an e-mail, go back and get the next id, send an e-mail, and so on until the end of the page, Then you select the next page, and repeat the process. It wouldn’t take long to process the 6K+ member list at computer speed.

Here are the Internet Headers associated with the e-mail I received. It shows the e-mail was sent from the MOC SMTP server. I even compared it to other legitimate e-mails I had received earlier from the MOC and the routing information is the same. But you have more experience with this crap than I so what do you think?
