I am a first time fiver, I was just wondering if it is necessary to stop at weigh stations along the road.

Larry,
Do a search on this very topic, there has been a bit of discussion on it. The answer to your question is NO. Rv's are not required to stop and weigh in.

Larry and Esther, congratulations and welcome aboard. We are fulltime rv'ers who have traveled this country for over three years (not counting vacations while we still worked) and something over 50k miles. We have never been required to stop at a weigh station. They are for commercial vehicles. If you ever see one with a sign that makes it very clear that private RV's or private trailers are to stop, then stop. Until then we will not stop. "All trucks" means all commercial trucks, not private pickups with private trailers. Hope this helps. Enjoy the new rig.

I noticed something in Oregon last week. Some of the jump scale type weigh stations are often not manned. You can usually tell if they are closed when the scale shack has the window covers down and no state vehicle parked nearby. However the scale is operational and you can pull each set of axles onto it and see the actual weight on the digital number board usually on a pole 30' or so from the shack. I found one near Coquille and pulled onto it and weighed each pickup axle and the trailer axles. Took about 5 min and I was on my way. The numbers seemed to match pretty closely what I found when I paid to have everything weighed last fall.
But this was free!
