Question Backup Generator questions

I am adding an Onan 5000 Watt gasoline generator. I was contemplating purchasing the 7000 Watt generator but don't know what the weight limit is inside the electrical/battery storage area for a generator. Anyone have any thoughts? The Onan and the Honda gasoline 7000 watt units weight 290 lbs. each. The Honda doesn't have a remote start or an exhaust kit that I could find yet. Onan has a recommended ATS but with the Honda, build your own is pretty much the standard. The Honda is about 10 decibels quieter.
My other thought was to mount the generator behind the cab of my pickup and just run a cord from the electrical compartment to the pickup but of course that would not allow me to drive anywhere while the wife stays cool inside with the AC running.
Anyone know the weight limit inside that compartment? It looks pretty flimsy with the wholes cut in the floor of it in the shape of a large rectangle form. I assume that is for ventilation. Wouldn't be very good to be driving down a bumpy road and have my generator fall through the floor and end up taking out the axles and everything else.
Thank you

I can't give you a max weight. But my other trailer had a genny. That flimsy bottom is cut out along those slots and the genny sits on brackets spanning the frame.

Does the genny fill the open hole so that no road wash from the truck fills the spot? How heavy was your generator?

It was a 4000w Onan. I don't know how heavy it was but it wasn't a lightweight. As far as the opening under the genny, it did allow for road dirt and water to enter the space but it wasn't a big deal. That space was made for it. In fact, I would open the door to the genny compartment and rinse it out washing the trailer.

Does your generator space have a shroud inside? Meaning, is where the genny sits sealed off fron the rest of the lower compartment as a generator prep package would have?

When deciding between mounting that new generator in the bed or the truck or the gen compartment in the fiver, also consider all the different way you may end up using the generator.

When traveling out west in the summer there could be times when you want to cool that fiver down the last hour before reaching the campground. With it mounted in the generator compartment you can fire it up and turn those a/c units then drive those last 50 or 60 miles.

“The Honda is about 10 decibels quieter”.

6 decibels doubles sound pressure. So the Onan isn’t a little bit louder it’s over twice as loud.

I have my Honda 3000 in the bed of my truck with a cord to the front of my camper with a receptacle in the front of the camper. I can cool the camper while driving.

I have the 7kw Onan in my Montana, the weight is almost the same as the 5.5kw and only a few hundred dollars more. Put it in in 2016 and have 2500hrs on it with no problems.

I carry our Honda on the back of the 5er. I made up a short 5' cord with twist locks on each end. It stays plugged in as we travel ready for use at any stop or to run A/C or furnace the last few miles before camp set up.

Certainly more than one way to skin a cat but I prefer a portable Genny as we use it often for other duties. I can see where the onboard has its advantages though if you only need it for the camper.
