Tandem towing
I've noticed on a few different threads mention of towing an additional vehicle, either trailer or boat, behind your RV. Here in New York I know that T/T drivers are permitted to tow tandems but I've never seen recreational vehicles towed in that manner. Anyone have experience with this?

I tow a swivel wheel trailer with a quad on it behind my 5th wheel. Avoiding some states and keeping the overall length within state law. I make a 0 dark thirty run for the Mississippi border. Check this list out. http://towingworld.com/towinglaws.cfm

Check with your local law enforcement for local/state laws. Where I travel, it is legal.

I am in Oregon and it is illegal, I think WA and CA are also illegal. I like the idea but don't want to risk it in OR

Like mentioned different areas of the US have different views on double towing. Most all of the central US allows double towing with no extra licensing per say to around 65' total length. In fact in my neck of the woods and several states either way, it's common to see recreational RVers and some long timers double towing. I'm pretty partial to my squirt boat and am not interested in using two tow vehicles to arrive at my destination. I have a wired rear view camera mounted on the back of my Montana that helps me keep an eye on the whole setup while traveling. No doubt someone will chime in on the frame warranty issue, but I chose it not to be an issue for me regarding my last two new Montanas. I bolted on an adequate hitch and hit the road before the ink dried on my loan agreements.

I believe it's not legal in New York or most of the east or west coasts for that matter. As stated earlier the middle of the country is ok with it.

It is common in this area of south central US ( TX, OK, NM, CO, etc.) to tow something behind a 5er. Usually small trailers with 4 wheelers, golf carts, or motorcycles. But I have seen very large boats (including a large party barge) and a trailer with an early sixties vintage classic Pontiac convertible.

Generally if it is legal in your home state you may do so in states that do not allow it. But you have to be within the legal length. Some states require a special endorsement on your drivers license. I believe in Georgia and Florida it is not legal but see it all the time.

It is legal in Calif. been doing it for years. Used to be able to tow up to 75', but no longer. Now limited to 65, but you do need a commercial class A lic.

Most posts seem mostly concerned with the legality of the issue. I would never have double towed our 07 3400RL with the cheap/weak frame it had. I'd have been more concerned with something breaking or coming loose than getting stopped by a LEO. Don't have that problem now, the MH has 15,000# tow rating.

Hi
The Federal regulations that allow a double tow on the Federal Highway system require the front trailer to be a fifth wheel type of hitch, the front trailer and the second trailer can’t exceed 28.5 feet in length and all trailer axels must have brakes and a breakaway breaking system.
Florida incorporated this in the Uniform Traffic Code sometime in the last year or so and made it legal for personal use vehicles as well.
Our Montana is 39 feet long so we are not allowed to pull a second trailer in Florida.

You're lucky. When Keystone told me no more than 200# on the rear hitch, I took them at their word.

Anyone else tired of hearing about the frame police. Open this site and click on the hitch. Your frame police are now selling a receiver that will tow 3000 lbs.

Do you know if any changes in the frame have been made from the time Montana said no towing until now? Because if there have, then what others have said about the frame may still be true for those earlier frames.

I sort of took it as "your hitch bad", "our hitch good".
