Telluride to/from Cortez hwy closed
Anyone planning travel in southwest Colorado on 145 between Cortez and Telluride be aware that the highway will be closed for some extended time due to rocks. Very BIG rocks. 2.3 million pound and 8.5 million pound!!!

Oh oh, I'm going to Priest Gulch (about 1/2 way between Cortez and Telluride) in early July! Should I bring my pick axe?

Uh, you might consider explosives.
It appears it happened between Delores and Priest Gulch. Says they plan a one lane bypass around it. But timing is based on determine stability of mountainside above. Google maps shows highway closed from north of Delores about three fourths of the way to telluride.

I found an article that said it was 12 miles north of Dolores before Priest Gulch. Two stories here, apparently.

You can go around if necessary. Cortez-Dove Ck-Naturita-Telluride or Durango-Ridgway-Telluride, but that would be longer.

Oh, I'll get there, even if I have to put the truck in 4 wheel low and go rock climbing! I suspect the road will be fixed or at least passable by the time I go. If it's only one lane it will be a little bit of a hassle as Dolores is the closest grocery store. Thanks for the alternative routing Scott.

Just be aware that the Durango-Ridgway-Telluride route is over Red Mountain Pass on 550, south of Ouray. I wouldn’t tow my 5er over that pass, and I’m fearless.

Saw on the noon news today video of them already blowing up those huge boulders. Considering the importance of that highway, likely they will have it repaired in short time.

Highway 89 south of Page, AZ suffered the same fate a few years. It took a couple of years before the road opened. We were there in 2014 and had to take a long way around to get to Page.

Loanoak, I don't think the page highway was closed 2 whole years. I think it was closed for quite a while - mayb 6 months to a year, then reopened; but had another slide and closed a second time for several months.

Heard on the news last night that CDOT has constructed a temporary single lane dirt road around the obstruction, and will begin clearing the highway today.

Sounds like the damage was limited to two relatively small areas. So the big question is probably determining the stability of the mountainside above and knocking down any other areas that might drop unpredictability.
Interesting, but kinda long, story. We went to Fun Valley Family RV Campground on US 160 between South Fork and Wolf Creek Pass many years ago. US 160 was squeezed between a mountain on one side and the river and the far end of the campground on the other. Only way to widen the highway was to blast out part of the mountain. Someone made a big mistake. Just before we arrived the first explosion blew car size boulders across the highway, into the campground, shearing off several very large spruce trees just above ground level. And burying the highway. Fortunately they had sense enough to evacuate that section before the blast. For 4-5 days, 24 hours a day, we heard the beep beep of backup warnings and booms of large rocks being dumped in trucks. There were 14 family and friends there in RVs and cabins so we could not easily pack up and move somewhere else. By the 5-6 day they had the highway back open. And campground cleared of boulders. And campground had plenty of firewood for sale.
