Do You Use a Cetane Booster

I go back and forth on diesel fuel additive. I have used Kleen additive and I know it increases my MPG by about 1.5 - 2 MPG when not towing. In the central part of the U.S. right now I am finding a big difference in fuel prices. Shell may have diesel for $3.99 and Kroger for $3.74. Who know the quality. Along with boosting cetane most additives add lubrication, which can't hurt. Is it worth the time and money to always use some type of additive for each fill-up, and which brand?

I use additive about every 3 tanks, I don't know if it helps the truck, but it gives me peace of mind

I use Kleen as well in almost every fill-up. It appears to increase the fuel mileage a little according to the on-board computer. But I do know it helps the truck run smoother. I am vigilant about using it in the winter (October - April) to prevent gel in the fuel system.

On my 03 Duramax LB7 that has known injector issues I use Kleen every tankfull it quiets my injectors and I get a little increase in MPG, and I also use low ash 2 stroke oil every so often to lube then, On your 2012 6.7 I would think you would only have to use additives every once in a while

Haven't used anything at all (maybe we've just been lucky) and since we have a Kroger store card we buy gas and diesel from them everywhere we go and again no problems. The Kroger stores vary from Kroger it's self to Dillions in Kansas and Fry's in Arizona but we've never had a problem there.

I've gone back and forth using Diesel Kleen. And have determined that different fuel has a bigger effect on MPG that just about anything else. I try and use Premium Diesel when I can, but less and less stations offer it. There was a post on another Diesel forum that listed the average Cetane ratings for the different major brands running from about 40 up to nearly 50, but I don't remember what forum I saw it on.

I have never used any additives. But I have tried to buy diesel with higher cetane ratings. Problem is that pumps are rarely labeled, and the attendants seem to have no idea what cetane is.
Here is some cetane rating info posted on another site. Have no idea how accurate it is.
BP (Amoco branded), 51;
Countrymark fuels Diesel-R, 50
Chevron, 49; or 51 with Techron D labels in select markets
ConocoPhillips through the 76 stations (California) 47-53
PetroCanada, 47-51
BP (Powerblend 47, otherwise 40-42)
Shell, 46;
Sinclair, 46;
Sunoco Gold, 45 (often +1-5) Sunoco regular is usually 40.
Exxon/Mobile, 43-46
Holiday Stations, 40-43
HESS, 40-42, can be up to 45.
Husky, 40 + diesel Max additives raise another 1-3 from there (41-45 max)
Love's: 40
Pilot: 40
Valero: 40
Sheetz: 40
Flying J, 40
Wawa, 40
The major truck stops seem to run the lowest cetane rating so I never buy my diesel there unless there is no other easy choice.

My 5.9 does just fine on any fuel without an additive, but I do add Kleen about every 5th fill up in the winter.

Use Kleen with every fill-up for the truck and both VW TDIs.

I use Lucas Fuel Treatment. It is not a cetane booster. It provides injector lubrication. Cost about$30/gal at truck stops/AutoZone Parts stores.

I was never inclined to use any fuel additive until I had to have my turbo cleaned on my 2009 CTD because it sooted up and was losing power. Thankfully it was done under warranty. The dodge mechanic suggested that I use a cetane booster additive.
Long story short, I use Diesel Kleen (from Wally World) year round ( white in winter and silver in non freezing temps) and no more sooting turbo and it runs strong. I don't track my MPG (I didn't buy the truck for the great mileage) , but it runs great. I use the additive EVERY tankful. I'm convinced it's worth the $$ spent. JMHO

I only use it in the Winter October to March in my 2012 Ford F250 6.7 to keep it from Gelling up. Not much in the Summer.

I use Stanadyne every tank. My feeling is, if you need it on one tank you need it on every tank. The Stanadyne will bring the cetane up to 46 using 8 oz per 30 gallons. Then I add 8 oz of cetane to bring it up to 50. The fuel systems on these trucks cost $8000+. If this helps preserve the fuel system it is well worth what it cost. I see no difference in the truck, no difference in noise, fuel mileage, the way it runs, nothing.

I use Opti-Lube XPD in my truck. I use 0.25 ounces/gallon in the summer and 0.5 ounces/gallon in the winter. Lab tests from several sources show higher cetane values promote longer engine life.

Since 2008 have been using CTAN additive. Prior to that Ford said not necessary, Since 2008 Ford dealer here in NC and Florida recommend usage and I buy mine from Walmart also.

When I had my 2006 F350 with the 6.0L motor the service manager at the Ford dealership told me to use an additive due to carbon issues on the turbo variable pitch vains. I continue to use it with my 2011 F350 6.7 motor.

I did on my ford for a few tanks full but didnt notice a big increese in milage and combining the cost of fuel, and all the other additives we are forced to put in our trucks for EPA reasons or the truck wont run along with cetane boosters. the price of fuel get out of control when added all together.
My 6.7 Ram dont need any help it is the perfect set-up for our 2980RL. so I dont buy any.

Primary reason I run CTAN is not to make the engine run better, but to make it run longer.

These new trucks were actually designed to run on 50 cetane. A friend who has a tester for cetane checked fuel here and found some that was 37. An engine running on 50 cetane will produce less soot than one using 40 cetane fuel. So your truck will go into regen less often. Another big advantage to using an additive is they have lubrication in them that your high pressure fuel pump needs. It don't much to ruin a pump that will pump up to 30,000 psi. Your warranty normally wont cover the $8.000+ to replace it. To me the additive is cheap insurance.
