Skylight Cover

We love natural light that comes through the skylight in the shower except when it is 106 degrees outside and we are trying to keep the trailer cool. So I finally took the time to make a cover.

I bought a $3.97 car window shade, cut it out to fit our skylight frame (outside edge), and I then used my serger and stitched a 4 thread over lock stitch on it. Then I used some Velcro stuff that is designed for high and low temperature situations. I bought it at Wally World too. I put the shiney side up. WOW! It droopped the temp about 20degrees. It is simple to take down when we want the natural light but when the trailer is stored it will limit the UV.

Took off the trim piece, removed the inside clear dome, bought a car styrofoam backed sunshade with a reflective side, cut the shade to fit the clear dome, used aluminum tape to secure it to the dome shiny side up, reinstalled the dome and trim. I still get some diffused light through the dome but it cut the heat in the bedroom significantly.

Like you Carol we like the light and even the heat in the winter. Bought a sunshade made to fit from Camping World years ago and put it up with velcro. It does make a huge difference. We use the insulated pillows in the winter and we use the one on the fantastic fan in the summer, but because we have a fan cover and we want some light in the bathroom we do leave the pillow out of the bathroom one in the summer.

Picture please, sounds like you hit it right on the head, DW runs the serger, I (she) would like to duplicate, thanks

From the sounds of this, these covers are on the inside? This would make easy on/off. I would be afraid of trapping excessive heat and causing early deterioration of the dome if applied inside. I say this, not from experience, but as secondhand information from folks who have damaged double pane windows in RV's by putting the reflective material in windows rather than on the outside. I'd guess that a breathable material might not create the same issue as reflective material.

I've thought, in the past.. when I was more agile.. about covers for the skylights applied outside.. but, I won't climb on the roof much any more

I did a similar fix. Ace Hardware sells that silver insulated material and I bought a piece and cut to fit the skylight frame. Then I edged it with duct tape and placed a couple of the 3M white hooks around the frame. The cover slides in nicely when you want to cut the heat and removes when you want the light.

This situation is proof positive that necessity is the mother of invention. Lots of great ideas. I will try and take pictures tonight when we arrive in Medora.

I used a trick I use as a photographer: I installed a light diffuser. To diffuse the light, while keeping it very bright in the shower, but to block the sun and it's damaging rays, I took off the inside bubble, and taped a piece of white freezer paper over it to cover it completely. Once smooth, with no wrinkles, I reinstalled the trim.
Now we have bright, diffused natural light coming in, but no sun.
