Well I guess I'm out numbered, but the last two 4x4's almost never got used and never save the day for me. Did help some freinds out of trouble..
I now have a 4x2 and haven't missed the 4x4. Got suck once in the desert and once on the beach in Pismo but just aired down the tires and drove right out.
If I live some where else maybe I would have 4x4 but not here. Seemed like and unneeded expense, but then again I'm on a fixed income.

We have a dually because we have a heavier 5er than many of you.

Coming from snow country, I wanted a 4x4, just because I always had 4WD. Skip ahead to our last 6 years of full-timing and chasing the sun. Well, no snow, but lots of sand, wet grass and the occasional mud pit. Without our 4x4 we would be stuck.

Also, before adding the Level Up, we sometimes found ourselves in situations where we needed to block and stack, meaning we needed to put quite a few levels of Lynx levelers on one side. With 4WD, I could use low-low and precisely put the trailer tires on the levelers.

Like Tom S pointed out the low range is very useful. When going up a long very steep grade and going slow you can switch to low range to cool your transmission down.
Rondo they make the JDs green and GOLD for a reason. We have 3 of them a compact a 75 horse and a 1958 model 520 pooping John fully restored.

Besides that, my Chevy dealer says that now days, a 2 wheel drive isn't worth spit at trade in time! I've been real glad the old Silverado is 4X4 on several occasions. Especially when the grass is wet and I want to move the 5er. Just put it in low 4X4 and don't even touch the accelerator pedal. Put it in drive and it walks right out to the street.

Due to where we live, you can't give away a 2WD truck, and I've used 4WD several times towing or backing Monty through soft dirt or wet grass to get into our storage site.
Also use 4WD in snow storms if we have to go out.

I guess I'm the minority here. In the past 10 years I've had 2 4x2s and one 4x4. I found that the 4x4 just got me "stucker". Then again, I don't live where there's any snow, and in general don't frequent campgrounds that would need 4wd. I do have a nice tow strap and front tow hooks if I ever do get in the unfortunate position of getting stuck. I prefer the lower stance of a 2wd with the amount of times I have to get in and out of my truck on a daily basis. I did enjoy my 4x4, but I didn't feel that I needed it when shopping for my current truck.

I've had seven trucks, no 4 x 4, never needed it, and never foresee an occasion when I'd ever buy one. And, have had no problem selling the 4 x 2s.

I use 4 wheel drive a lot when taking the trailer around. When at home I don't go to many RV parks. We go to campgrounds. Some of them even have hookups. It's a less developed part of the country. I guess we are more into the camping lifestyle, enjoying the great outdoors. And yes, 4X4 is handy when there's no asphalt.

Just last week we backed into a campsite after a two day rain. Would have never made it without 4WD, not that I was pushing deep mud. The surface was slick and 2WD just slipped. Wet grass does the same thing.

However, I’m getting ready to purchase a compact tractor and it isn’t a 4X4. I hope I don’t regret that but the purchase price and what I will actually be using it for helped me in the decision.

I'll be darned, I didn't even think they made a compact tractor any more with two wheel drive. My Massey is a 4X4 and I use it a lot. Even the big 200-300 HP tractors I run are mostly 4X4's now. Of course, I recently acquired the ultimate 4X4 trailer tow rig.....an Army "deuce and a half".

We moved our last load to the house March 22nd in a 12" snow and got stuck with 4 wheel drive low pulling the Uhaul. Slid down the drive backward with the Uhaul hanging over a slight embankment. Changed my you know whats. this was about 1:00 am after driving all day from Texas. back at it in the morning. Couldn't get unstuck with two trucks in 4 wheel drive, had to use chain and a come along. Needed both trucks in 4 wheel drive low with the lead truck having chains on the front to get up the hill. The 4 wheel drive went out of mine as we got to the top of the hill. After unloading, I couldn't even get the truck turned around with the Uhaul because I needed 4 wheel drive and chains on the front. Fortunately this is the last time I have to haul a Uhaul up that drive in the snow. This is an extreme case, but all of our vehicles have four wheel drive and will have chains as well. We're on private roads and they don't plow unless its more than a 6" snow. It is now mid April and they got 16" yesterday with another 18" coming by tomorrow night. I think I can safely say I "need" 4 wheel drive. But I also use it when I'm towing on wet roads, grass, loose material, etc. by the way, it was almost 90 degrees today in Texas. Ten days till the great migration to the north.

I would not be without a 4x4 in a pickup. With a heavy diesel front end or dually rear end flotation it is even more important.

I live on a hill.. I could never back my 5er up the hill w/o 4x4 in LOW. Otherwise.. it's a toss up. It makes the difference of convenience by not having to park at one of the RV storage facilities.. which is also big bucks in my part of the country.. That alone will pay for the difference between 4x2 vs 4x4. I'm happy.

I'm on my third 4x4 truck, and if you add the Jeep Rubicon I had, I've got a little experience with 4x4's.

Sure, I love mine, I like the feeling of knowing that I can get out of most situations I get myself into with my 4x4. Having said that, there's an adage that states having a 4x4 just gets you stuck further off the main road than a 4x2 would....

Rhondo's post about "green" tractors reminded me of the time I managed a farm operation where we generated large volumes of "organic fertilizer" that had to be spread throughout the year, snow or no snow. Hence the decision was made to buy tractors with front wheel assist which was not real common back then. That led to the purchase of Olivers. 1-1900, 2-1850's,& 1-2255. all with FWA ,That sealed my belief in 4X4s. The I got an 84 F-150 4x4 and I'm on my 4th 4x4 since then with my TV being 2011 SRW SD 4x4 6.7L. I would buy a 4x2 if I lived in a no snow zone and never went off a paved highway but I just can't see that happening!! Keep Smiling!!
