Another Marathon tire failure
I'm a retired engineer and have been in management too; so my heart want's to design it right, but my management background allows me to understand why perfect is not economical.
HOWEVER... I just do not understand why after so many years and occurrences of Marathon tire failures, Keystone still puts them on the 5th wheels they sell.
I bought my 3700RL Montana in December 2011 and although I dickered with the salesman to get the price down, the $500-$1000 difference to drive a safe rig would not have stopped closing the deal. I had less than 10,000 miles on my Monty (most miles in the northeast) when one of the folks at the Montana Rally noticed that TWO of my four tires where separating. I would be far more aggravated if I had continued my trip from Myrtle Beach to Florida and not noticed this and had trailer damage or a bad accident.
THIS is not a new issue, five of the 13 Montana owners in our last Rally have experienced Marathon tire failures and the solution is pretty simple. Put Goodyear G614 RST or some other recommended tires the MOC group has identified on Montys and one of the biggest complaints I hear about Montana's will be resolved.
Goodyear was good enough to refund me 100% cost of separated tires and 50% cost of the remaining three tires I was upgrading from to cover cost of the PROPER tire replacement for the Montana.
PLEASE don't continue to embarrass Monty owners and supporters by putting inadequate tires on the rigs!!!
We will be asking the Lazy Days dealership this same question and asking for resolution.

Is this continuing problem with chinese [ junk ] tires meet the criterior[sp?] for a class action suit ? JMHO- Don

Good point, but most likely not. Everyone who has had the junk tires paid for them and signed on the dotted line.

We got rid of our Marathons as well...had the same problems as Terry...but we had had no resolution with Goodyear yet as we replaced them with firestones ....but we will see how it ends....

I think these marathons are worse that the Missions. That GY reimburses without a arguement says they are aware of the issue.However we had marathons of two of our TT's and never a problem???

It all comes down to the weight of the rig and Marathons having no reserve capacity.

We just bought a 2013 3100RL. The dealer told us that this one has a different set of Marathons on it. Did we screw up by not having him change them out? Should we travel to Yellowstone with them on Wednesday? Or should we get them changed out immediately?

Carefully inspect your tires on both sidewalls of each tire- What you need to see is "MADE IN AMERICA"- That would be the deciding factor for me as to towing on those tires or trading for a good product- JMHO- Don

Carol,
He's BSing you about a "different" Marathon. Ask him what the difference is. They are all made in China and they all WILL fail at some point. They are the wrong tire for the weight of our rigs. Get rid of them ASAP and tell the dealer he's full of crap.

Thanks DonandJudy_12 and NCFischers for your feedback. I will check first thing tomorrow morning as to what is on there. I have no problem letting him know he is full of it. We haven't picked it up yet so I will work with them. Due to the time constraint I may just choose to change them out on our own.

Also, I'd double check the tire capacity, it's on the sidewall, and compare it to your axle capacity.

As that article that was on our forum and has been on other forums all over the web states. Marathons (doesn't matter where they are made) have no reserve capacity. That means any little thing will bring failure on a rig as heavy as ours. With Marathons it's really not if, but when. Carol, I'm going to email you the article.

When we took delivery in December 2010 -
I ordered new tire and replace the Marathons within the first 2000 miles on the trailer. I have read to many RV friends having blow outs and damage. My peace of mind made driving alot easlier. Only problem a "tire expert" on this discussion group recommend going up a size in tire - that we had lots of room. My tires are marking the skirts when I turn. Will go back to standard size when I replace in couple years.

Thanks again to everyone for their input. So if I understand everyone correctly I should get on the phone with Goodyear and see about them giving me a deal to switch me up to the G614 (based on the article and email DQDick sent) and that I should be okay to get to Yellowstone and back. Once we get back I need to get them changed out. I would love to get them changed out before our trip but since we aren't picking the rig up until tomorrow afternoon, and then leaving Wednesday. I don't think there is time. I am still going to try though. Thanks again for sharing your expertise, experiences, and taking the time to write me. I hope I didn't hijack this post!

We went up to the 614's on our rig and were forewarned by the dealer that there may be some rubbing on the inside of the fender skirt. They said to keep an eye on it and if it became problematic, they would take a Dremel tool and grind some of the plastic away. We have not had the rubbing problem so haven't had to take this remedy, however, it may bear your consideration.
