Ozz - That's a tough question without an exact answer. I think all of the options you presented will work in some fashion, but the key is the distance to the signal source and what objects lie in the signal path that might reduce the strength. Longer distance or more objects in the path require an antenna with higher gain like the parabolic antennas you found (including the homemade ones). The disadvantage of these is that they typically have a very narrow beam width and require you to point them carefully to pick up a signal. If you think you will generally be some distance away, I would suggest that you build your own (but don't use the plasma torch to assemble!) - it will probably work as well as the commercial ones and be a lot cheaper.

I couldn't find any pricing and haven't used this product, but it appears to be an all around solution that should be easy to use. The quality appears (?) to be good and it looks like they are using a commercial type, high gain vertical antenna that you don't have to worry about orienting.

Let us know how you make out!

It's a pretty straight forward tutorial of wi-fi and antennas.

Ozz,

I don't know what you have now, or how "good" you have to get, but following the KISS principle, here are a couple of easy improvements over the standard issue wi-fi antenna.

Link-sys wi-fi network adapter (a remote stand alone unit with a little flip-up antenna that attaches to a USB port). (Available at Wal-mart etc.) This is what I use, and it gives a definite improvement over the little card that plugs into the side of a lap top.

The other thing I have seen at Flying J, is a plug in card, with a mag mount external antenna. I have no experience with these, but I would think that if Flying J sell them to support their WiFi service, they would make sure that it is was something that would work for their trucker customers.

I admit, neither of these is likely as "good" as the dish type antennas, but how "good" do you have to be? I would think that those dish-type antennas are very directional, and would need to be set up and aimed line-of-sight to the transmitter.

Just my thoughts on the subject.
