Utah's National Parks

Seeing Utah's National Parks is on our bucket list. All five appear to be close enough together that setting up camp somewhere in the middle and then visiting them from there would work. Anyone done this? Any recommendations for a campground would be appreciated. Would need to have full hookups and pet friendly. TIA.

Stay in Moab and you can easily get to Canyonlands and Arches. We stayed at Portal RV Resort in Moab and liked it.

Other side of the state for the other popular parks and not a days drive from Moab. I don't think there is a place to establish a base camp in Utah where getting to all the parks is realistic in a days drive.

If you are in Cedar City try Best Western Plus on the corner of 56 and business 15 east side of town, they have about 12 spots FHU, nightly free bbq for guests, breakfast in the morning. Call for availability .

If going thru Beaver just up the 15 try the Beaver Dam RV park. Was only $13 for FHU with Passport America and the restaurant, Maria's, is in the park. (very good Mexican food).

I agree on using Moab for Canyonlands and Arches NP. We stayed at OK RV Park and it meet our needs. While there be sure to go to Dead Horse Point State Park and take a drive on hiway 128. Try to have lunch at Quesadilla Mobilla.

JJ--I will write you a PM on our experiences in Utah. We really like all the National Parks in the state as well as the North Rim of the Grand Canyon.

Agree with prndl … stay in Moab for Arches, Canyonland, and Dead Horse. Move on west and stay around Zion National Park for the sights over that way. Beats being on the road more trying to get there than taking in the sights. We stayed at Spanish Trails in Moab abit a bit pricey. For the Zion, Bryce views, we initially stayed at Zion River Resort, but our sight was extremely close quartered with our neighbors, so we moved on to Hurricane, UT and stayed at Willowwind which was WAY better and had tons of shade. We had an easy hour and a half drive to reach the North Rim of the Grand Canyon from there as well.

Keep in mind the time of the year you plan on traveling there. Many of the parks were very over full capacity. long wait lines to enter parks, then no parking. Spring break will cause the parks to fill fast. Also jeep safari week at Easter in Moab. Summer as well, but then you also have to contend with the summer heat in southern Utah 100 deg. plus.
These parks are basically in my "backyard". Late winter or fall has worked out well for us. If you want to see snow in the parks then this time of year will work. Check out Monument Valley if you have never been there.

Have a great trip! Keith

Just remembered...don't know what you are towing but the Zion Tunnel is height limited. Unless you are going the over the top route in Utah.

Moab has several CGs - we stayed in Moab Valley CG. It was OK, but the trucks coming down the hill outside their front gate all night with jake brakes blatting was not an inspiration to return the next year.

Cedar City area has lots of CGs. We liked the KOA and stayed there the following year. Just down the road a mile or so is a grocery store with the best homemade donuts I ever had. There are also several decent Mexican restaurants in Cedar City if you are so inclined

Trying to stay in a central location is tough. There are lots of miles between Moab/Arches and Zion/Bryce plus a mountain range with some winding roads.

FWIW, we liked Bryce Canyon better then Zion. Fewer crowds and better parking though we did luck out at Zion and were able to park inside the gates and on the front row with a very early arrival.

Ditto on Cedar City KOA. One of the nicest campgrounds we have stayed at. We stayed in Moab (KOA), another KOA not far from Zion, and Cedar City. Bryce Canyon was our favorite. This was in the fall of 2014.

No one mentioned Capitol Reef. We really enjoyed it. We stayed at Thousand Lakes RV Park in Torrey, UT. Nice campground with a restaurant and Torrey is a cute town.

Utah tour in May

We have reservations for Grand Canyon Village on the south rim for 3 days, followed by J&J RV in Kanab for a week. Then we are going to Gouldings in Monument Valley for 5 days, followed by Portal RV in Moab for a week. Then on to Salt Lake City for a week. We are thinking Zion, Bryce Canyon and Grand Canyon North Rim from Kanab. Arches and Canyonland from Moab.

We would like any advice on if this is a good pattern to see the National parks and monuments, roads capable of handling the 41 foot Monty, and if our choice of RV parks is good. We would also like to know of any great side trips to take in the TV and best way to see the National parks. Your input is appreciated.

Sounds like a fun trip. Bryce will be a bit of a drive, but still can be done if planing it as a day trip. Be sure to hike down among the hoodoos. Truly amazing !
Page Arizona is not far from Kanab as you will go by it if you are going to take Rt 89 from GC to Kanab. The Glen Canyon Dam Is located near Page. Also Lake Powell that the dam creates. Red rock and blue water really striking.
Gouldings is the only place you will want to stay as it is right there in Monument Valley. Excellent choice! Try to take a tour on to the Native American land. They will pick you up right at the camp ground where you will check in. Something I will never forget.

Enjoy your adventure! Keith

Similar to the trip we took a couple of years ago. Get up early and be in Arches before 7:00 and drive all the way to the end where the parking lot will fill by 8:00. This is where Landscape Arch is. We took prepared breakfast and coffee on the hike and had a great time. Go late and there will be no parking. It also was about 31Deg when we were there.

We're planning a boondock late May in Duck Creek and Cedar City for Memorial Day
