Ota dvr

We utilize DirecTV for satellite in our Montana and as a result, don’t get local channels while traveling. We of course can see local channels with our antenna, but would like the opportunity to record OTA programming. Has anyone found a good option without internet or monthly fees to record OTA signals?

It looks like that requires internet. Have you used it without a connection?

It only requires it for the Sling, Netflix apps. You may have to momentarily connect to set it up. There's also a Dish Network app to stream off the Hopper. Just make sure you have bandwidth and unlimited data for the streaming.

This may possibly what you are looking for.

It looks like the old school VHS and DVD recorders.

I assume you don't have the DirecTV Distant Network Package (DNS) which provides the network feeds from N.Y. or L.A. That is the optimum solution but requires a RV "installation". If you are taking a box from home it isn't going to apply to you.

The next option is to call DirectTV when you move and tell them you are at you winter/summer home/cabin/condo (anything other than a RV) and would like to change your Service Address, not your Billing Address, to your location. You can invent an address in the area if you are boondocking. Go for a nearby larger metropolitan address (Phoenix, not Yuma or Quartzsite) where you can get a full compliment of local stations. The local channel's spot beam is usually large enough to cover a 150-300 mile radius so you can move around in that area without losing the signal. When you move to another area, call DirecTV and repeat the exercise. Sometimes you get an agent who doesn't know how to do it or is reluctant to help. Just hangup and call back. You will get another agent out of the hundreds working and likely more accommodating. I have several friends who do this as fulltimers. The only downside is if there are folks at home who are planning to watch your home locals. Changing the Service Address affects any boxes left at home (i.e. they will be trying to see the same channels as you but they are not in the spot beam).

One other option might be (I haven't been able to do this - YET) is a Local Channel Connector kit (LCC). You probably have to be at home to do this, but if your home service gets Denver channels it, may apply as I think the local CBS channel is blacked out. The premise is: If you are in an area that a local is currently blacked out, you can call Directv and ask them to send you a (LCC). It will only work on Genie receivers but will integrate all of your local OTA channels into your Genie. The kit comes with an antenna and USB adapter and will work if you can receive OTA signals at your location. It is speculated that once you have the LCC you can go anywhere and it will find the OTA locals there. This is similar to the old AM21 device which they used to sell but don't any longer.

Blackouts due to contract arguments are going to happen, it is just a matter of time. I plan to get a LCC when it happens next time. Last time I missed a 49er game due to the blackout. Not that they were any good, but it was a game they could win.
