Folsom, California to Rapid City, SD

Taking a trip this August from Folsom, Calif to Rapid City, SD. Looking for the best route but avoiding secondary (narrow) roads and as many mountains as possible.

The first route is I-80 east to Rawlins, 287 north to 220 east to Casper. Then I-25 south to 18-20 east to 18-85 north to 18 east through Hot Springs. From there get onto 79 north to Rapid City.

The second route (which is longer but roads may be better) is I-80 east to Laramie. From there get on 30 north to Bolster Junction and catch 34 to I-25 north to 18-20 east to 18-85 north to 18 east through Hot Springs. From there get onto 79 north to Rapid City.

Any other routing suggestions would be appreciated.

If you are looking for the absolute easiest, take I80 to I25 at Cheyenne, Wyoming. That will be a little longer but also the fastest.

I have driven a LOT in Wyoming. Stay away from the Big Horns and the Jackson/Yellowstone areas and all roads are good. Even Big Horns and Jackson have good roads, but mountains!!

All the state highways are pretty flat and not narrow, so I have no problem towing on them. And not many towns in WY to slow you down, so all good.
