Extra Fuel tank?

I have a 2000 F350 SRW long bed and we tow a 2004 2955RL I've done fuel tank mods on my stock tank and now can hold 40 gallons. I recently got a free 77 gallon tank that mounts in the truck bed, it sells for allmost $2000 I really want the extra fuel, but I'm not sure about the idea of loosing the space in my truck bed. How many of you have a bed mounted fuel tank? and is it worth the lose of bed space? We boondock 95% of the time, sometimes up to a month in one place, so I carry alot of things in the back of my truck. Right now we live in Ca. and we travel every year to our off grid property on the Canadian border. However in the next year or so we plan on traveling 7 to 8 months a year.
Thanks

I have a 2015 F350 LB and have a 40Gal tank in the bed. I have room between the hitch and the tank to carry two Honda Gens. Lots of room between the hitch and the tail gate to carry items. Have never wished I did not install the tank.

I have a 40 gallon in-bed tank that works just fine. Since you already carry 40 gallons are you sure you want to take on the additional weight of 77 more gallons plus the weight of the tank? ( About 700 lbs).

I've always wondered how far over the Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) people are that put extra fuel tanks in their truck.....

Well 77 gallons of diesel is a little over 534 pounds by my math, not sure how much the tank wieghs? Maybe 100-150 LBS. Not enough of a total gain in wieght to influence my decision. I have a tool box about the same size as the tank, and I have removed it before when I wanted extra space for bigger items, Like a 45 gallon water barrel that we use for boondocking. And once the fuel tank is installed, it won't be coming in and out like the tool box. Also for my own reasons I try to never let my fuel to get below a 1/4 tank if I can help it. Also filling up with 117 gallons of fuel at say 75 cents less per gallon at a station I may not have made it to with just the one tank. We often do a lot of backroad (Dirt RdS) travel when boondocking with and without the 5ver eating away at the fuel. Which leads to filling up at a more rural area (2 pumps, Gas-Diesel) for more money. The funny thing is I never even considered this until this Diamond plate shiny 77g wedge tank fell into my lap from a very good non RV'ER freind. I just reread this and it sounds like I'm trying to talk myself into it. Plus the better half still has the first dollar she ever made, she wants me to put it in even if it only saved us a penny a gallon. LOL

I have a 2015 F350 4wd long bed. The stock tank is about 38 gallons, I think. I added a 41 gallon in the bed tank and have yet to wish I hadn't. Another MOC'r (thanks Tim M.) reminded me that it is so much easier to refuel at the end of a travel day after setting up than to worry about negotiating the pumps with the trailer attached. I don't plan on any really long driving days but this way I know I can drive as far as I want to in a given day without refueling.

I also have a extra tank, in sig, loving it. Gives the the ability to quit wondering where I am going to fuel.

So it sounds like I'm going to have my wedge tank installed. Your inputs have told me what I was allready thinking. The last time I had a truck with dual tanks was 30 years ago. I know things have changed, I just remember having a transfer switch on the floor kinda under the seat, and it was a pain. But that was lets just say the "OLD DAYS" Now I assume the bed mounted fuel cell would have a electric switch? Or is just plumbed straight into the existing tank and both tanks are "on" at the same time?

I added a 40 gal tank to my 3500 DRW CTD this spring. Gives me about 70 gal total or little over 700 miles range when towing. The fuel tank takes up 9 inches of the front of the bed; with the tool box behind it, they both take up 30 inches. The tank is plumbed into the filler pipe on the original tank with a manual shut-off valve. Off, use fuel from main tank. On, fuel flows to the main tank from aux tank. I watch for cheap fuel stops; recently filled at Costco for 2.05/gal. About .30-.40 cheaper than anywhere else. Since we rarely do more than 300 miles per day, I never have to fuel while hooked up.

Why Ford makes a truck with a 26 Gal tank is a mystery. I have looked into replacing the tank with aftermarket 50Gal but kind of pricey. Didn't want to loose box space as I already have a short box but after some research and aux tank with 30-40 Gal will only take up about 10 inches so still room for other stuff in front of the hitch. That should give me lots of capacity for a full days driving with no fill ups.

I replaced my OEM tank with a 70 gallon tank. The OEM gauges work the same as if they were in the original tank.

I have a 60 gal tank in the bed and wouldn't leave home without it. I'm plumbed straight from the aux. to the main tank by way of gravity feed. I leave my pet cock open at all times and when i see the fuel gauge move i know i have emptied the aux tank and am on the main tank. Love getting fuel much cheaper than truck-stops.

That's what I was thinking, what did you do with the vent hose. I'm thinking a check valve on the vent hose. This should allow fuel to gravity feed down to the main fuel line??

I'm sorry if my spelling is bad, the older I get the worse it gets. And I can't find a spell check option

Don't worry about the spelling, the older i get , the worse i read. If you are talking about the vent hose on the aux. tank it is at the top of the tank and i have a hose on the fitting and it hangs down about 8'' inside of bed.To keep the main tank from overflowing from the aux. you have to make sure the main tank cap is snug . My cap on the main tank was not sealed once and the main tank filled and continued filling and started leaking fuel out of the i think overflow of main tank. I have the 2013 ram with the blue plastic cap on filler which i believe i got from Geno's garage. Not all trucks work the same and i had mine installed professionally. Gravity is the best on account all i do is fill the aux. tank and forget about it. Having to turn your aux. valve on and off when truck is full would be a pain. Just be sure if you have a ram that your main tank is not venting thru the cap. I did that once and that's when i had trouble with overflow. Good Luck.

Well it seems that My TRANSFER FLOW INC. Fuel tank prides them selves on non gravity feed tanks. So my fuel lines come out the top. I'm going to buy the kit to install it to the main tank filler hose, but I'm going to install a fuel bulb, like for out board motors. One or to pumps would bring it over the top of the tank, and then gravity takes over. Maybe not the easiest but other wise I would have to have a fuel pump hooked to the AUX. tank.

I recently installed a 50 gallon Titan Travel Trekker in my 2013 F350 CC short bed and it was nice to travel all day without having to fuel up. The 26 gallon truck tank was not big enough, but now I have a total of 76 gallons, which will take me about 700 miles between fill ups. I never have to fuel with the 5th wheel hooked up, which is much more convenient.

Maybe not the best situation but you will still get the benefit of having extra fuel available when traveling and not be hostage to truck-stops high prices.Good luck on install.
