Diesel Additive Comparison

I'd like to share this graphic. We have had a few threads encouraging the use of Diesel Power Service DPS additive. It doesn't rate so good.

No, but as I've said before, Opti-lube does.

I'd never seen that chart. Something to think about and research. I certainly don't want to damage my engine or waste my money. Thanks for the link.

There has been SOOOOOOOO many of these tests on Duramax forum's cummins powerstroke etc..and every one says different things and every person has a opinion on the brand they use WHO KNOWS FOR SURE???? I just use 2 stroke ashless oil in my LB7 Duramax with known injector issues with 160k on the clock and still running strong and it seems to work or am I just lucky??? But the Bottom line is KEEP YOUR FUEL CLEAN with a great filter and use Quality fuel

That chart was made from a study done on DieselPlace.com by a guy named Spicer, if I remember correctly, back around 06 or 07. Although it looks different, all the numbers are the same. The primary reason for adding lube is to improve the fuel delivery system life, not the engine. But if you've ever priced an injector pump or replacing injectors, you would understand the value.

I read that entire thread today. Need to note the year range of Cummins engines that was in. Like the guys running Jet-a.

I think our '12 engines would not like some of the stuff those guys are doing. I ran TWC-3 in my old 7.3 Ford and my 3126 CAT. But on my '12, which is stock and will stay that way, I'll probably just use the fuel I get from the pump.

I noted the Jet A comment also. My manual says not to use any of the Jet series... A, A1, 5, 8, B, or JP 4.

Some interesting pondering here. Has anyone ever noticed how much alike a truck stop and an airport smell these days? My old Silverado runs as good now as it did when I first bought it but, I'll be damned if I can get the same mileage as it once got! It's obvious to me that, over the last several years, diesel fuel blending has changed. Is that why jet engines and diesel engines don't smoke as much as they use to?

One possible factor, according to my Ford dealer, with the new diesel blend, octane levels are lower, averaging 35 while the new Ford diesels are designed to run at 40, and that is why he recommended using a CTAN diesel additive. I have used the Diesel Power DPS cited above, the non-ford product recommended by my dealer, sold by Walmart, and have had no engine issues. Put 150K miles on my 2005 6.0, an engine with a bad reputation, and never in the shop, and my 2011 runs fine.

We were told by Ford that our 2008 6.4 was designed to run on cetene level of 45 and that diesel out of the refiners is 41/42 so a cetene additive is recommended. Shell says their premium diesel is 45 or better so that is what we use when we can. We use the Diesel Kleen additive and have since day one. Do not know what is true or false, right or wrong and one can find information supporting every point of view. Our 6.4 runs fine, never a problem and our MPG is better that many who report on the 6,4.

LOL MIMF, the day jet engines start using diesel fuel, I will no longer fly. Heck, I'm still "curious" how to handle the french fry smell for diesel refueling but at least I'm not expecting to drop out of the sky. I'm glad I haven't noticed the similarity between an airport and a truck stop.

After using a fuel additive for many years in my '01 Dodge I continued to do so in my 2012. In discussion with the service department at my local Dodge dealer they claimed it was no longer necessary as the new engines were designed to operate on the low sulphur fuels.

When I had the injector pump and injectors replaced in my '84 Ford, the shop would not warranty them if I did not use an additive. There were significant problems with pumps when the low sulphur fuels were introduced.

As far as jet fuel and diesel fuel comparison, they share more similarities than differences as both are approximately 75% kerosene, it is the additives that are the greatest difference.

My warranty on my 2012 does not suggest using an additive, therefore I believe they must honor warranty issues whether you use it or not.

A jet engine will burn diesel...or even regular low lead gas. However there is a time limit on the number of hours you can use it.

The standard joke among the pilots was that if we pee'd in it it would fly...the only question was how long.

In my 20 years of service I only pump JP-4 in Jet Aircraft. Hundreds of thousands of pounds of it(lost count). Those C-141's, C-5's and B-52"s eat a lot of it.

I currently use Standyne and so far I'm happy
with the stuff even though it is expensive. Where
do you buy the Opti-Lub? I'd like to check it
out.
