Aux fuel tanks - Montana Owners Club

Anyone got some ideas on aux fuel tanks? I have a short bed and was wondering if any one makes a fuel tank that will be compatable with our fifth wheel or should I just load a couple of jugs with fuel? Thanks for the help. Let's go camping.

Don't they make a combination aux. fuel tank-tool box? Check with tractor supply co. or summit, they have truck sections on line.

I have a transfer flo 70 gallon aux. tank. It works great and gives us a full day of travel without worrying about fillups along the way.

We rolled that idea around for awhile then realized that we stop every three hours or so (change drivers, pit stop )anyway. Why not at a fuel stop. We have never thus far , not been able to find a fuel stop. Don't think we have ever run less than 1/2 tank.For us there was no advantage for the extra fuel tank.That may differ for others.

I like my 50 gallon Transfer Flow aux tank. I would get another. As some may say, it is pricey, I decided it was worth the price.

I have a short bed Chevy and opted for the Transfer Flow 45 gal replacement for the OEM tank. Costly, but does not take up any room in my little bed.........

In many cases the extra fuel tank is almost a necessity. We had to find a real good reason to spend the money and it had to serve a purpose(as in most anything we purchase)As we said we do not travel 10 or 12 hours without stopping and finding a fuel stop for the gas truck was never a problem. When we got the diesel we re thought the issue as we had a concern about the availability of ULSD fuel but that turned out to be a non issue. So for us other than having a lot of extra fuel and weight on board there was no advantage to a extra tank..Each of us are different in what our needs are.For those who need one it is a good choice.

Try RDS.... Aux Tank Tool Box.. Nice to buy fuel where you want to and not where you are forced to. Drive on by the hight cost stops and only where you know you can get fresh fuel

I went with the 50/gal transflow which gives me 85 gals when full,I can drive as long as I want without looking for fuel with the monty on the back.When I get to my designation I can set up and go online to find the cheapest fuel and top off I think it was well worth the investment and would do it again.

I went with a Titan 52 gal tank that replaces the 26 gal. and it only weighs 32 lbs. and stronger than factory. Just like transfer flow not cheap, but you get what you pay for. By the way that is for a short bed Duramax.

I'm looking at Northern Tools combo tanks.....probably the 51 gallon It would be nice to fill up when you want to, not when you need to. Especially with prices going crazy!!

For those that have the added fuel, was there a drop in fuel mileage, what with the added weight of the fuel? With fuel approaching or exceeding $4.00, there are some of us that need to watch our pennies,

If you want to go the cheap way buy 3 or 4 plastic yellow 5-gallon cans at wal-mart. I carry 3 in my tool box and only fill when pulling the 5er but have found that on most trips I don't use them but nice to have just in case. I only have a 29gal tank so it is nice to have the extra fuel just in case.

I try to run in the top of the tank but there have been times when we have gotten a little to close to empty for my comfort zone. I would hate to have to spend some time on the side of the road waiting for fuel. It reminds me of when we had our class A and all the side of the road times we experienced. Monty up and head'em out.

I had one fabricated from these people. It took them about 5 hours. I now have an extra 40 gallons under the toolbox complete with transfer switch.

It sure is nice to be able to buy fuel at the lower prices and be able to NOT have to buy fuel while towing.

I was looking at getting an aux./toolbox fuel tank, but I wanted to be able to close up the bed when I am not hooked up. I had the dealer swap out my 26 gal tank for a 50 gal tank on my 08 GMC Duramax/Allison SB 4x4 SRW. I have a sliding cover on my bed that is very sturdy and locks, so I can put things in the bed and close it up when we are just travelling around with just the truck. The new tank is spendy but worth it to me. We just went on a trip with our Monty, about 600 miles from Twin Falls to Portland and filled up about 1/2 way and had better than 1/2 a tank. We have a 2007 Montana 2985RL.

I have a 91 gal tool box combo. With fuel going up I filled the bed tank when the price was $3.15 a gallon. This will help on trip from TX to MI in a few weeks. I see no difference in fuel milage with the full tank. I put this tank in three years ago and I love it. I purchased a RDS through Northern Supply, it sets below the bed rails and I have it set up with an electric pump on the box. The pump clears my 5vr. I did this just in case I had to pump all the fuel out and could not run it all out through the engine. I just stop in rest area and pump the fuel and take a little break.

When we had the Chevy 4500 it had a 98 gal in bed fuel tank and two OEM tanks. When all were full I had a total 148 gals. I always ran 1,200 miles before I would take on fuel. Back then when fuel wasn't so high and you could find different prices it was a good Mod now with all the stations about the same price I wouldn't spend the extra dollars. Now if you have a Short bed truck thats a different problem. We only buy long beds and the GM tank holds 34 gals. Have never had a problem getting ULSD, so thats not a problem.

We also try and go 250 to 300 miles between RV parks. An try to stay at least two days. Unless the RV Park is a dump. I now try to refuel at either half full/half empty, doesn't feel so bad. I also think you should run the extra fuel tank thru the OEM tank. The Chevy 4500 had a switch when turned on it would refill your Oem tanks. Good Luck with you decision. GBY...

Just think put on 148 gals at $4.00 a gal. $592.00 (OUCH)
