Mail and email

Since we will be full timing somewhere between January and June does anyone have any insights as to mail and email. We have one resposible person with a real address and we are connected to yahoo.com but we're wondering if anyone has a better idea.

Yes, join Escapees ( www.escapees.com ) and use their mail service and don't rely on someone. They have a lot of other benefits including a great magazine, camping, seminars, and great friendship. They welcome anyone to join, but a geared toward fulltimers or filltimer wantabes. The forums are open to anyone, if you don't want to join. Also check out www.RV.net for another good RV forum.

Suggest a Forum Search for "mail forwarding services"...lots of info available. We, like many other folks, use Alternative Resources in Sioux Falls. There are others....

Re e-mail, whatever you use at your "stick house" should work fine on the road. Your server is the bigger problem....a lot depends on your connection to the Internet. If you are going to use a "dial up" service, get one with lots of access capability from anywhere in the US. Earthlink, AOL, etc... If you are going to use other connection capabilities (wi-fi, cell phone, satellite, etc, it dosn't seem to matter all that much. Security and spam filtering is an issue, so we still use AOL. Just because we are "used to it", and they have excellent "dial up" access from most anywhere if we can't get wi-fi or cell phone connection.

Hope that helps somewhat...others will be along to expand on those thoughts..Again, the Search function of the Forum yields great amounts of info.

For e-mail, get hotmail.com. You can access it from any computer or connection in the world. It also works with outlook express for $20.00 a year or you can use it as a web based e-mail for free.

Remember, email and internet can be two different items. Hotmail and Yahoo were mentioned as email services. There is another that I prefer. It is called gmail.com. It is free. It has loads of free storage online. You can view your emails without downloading them. There is an easy way to make them retrievable. The online storage is so large that you don't have to erase old email, rather put them in your archive for later recovery. You can access gmail from any computer anywhere in the world and since your server based rather than computer based, you don't leave anything behind on the computer where you are a guest user. It can be as sophistocated or as simple as you wish.

When you select a internet service, you always get email service with it. However, I suggest you not use it as your well advertised email address because consumers have a tendency to change providers and lose their email address. With the internet or server based email service (gmail, hotmail, yahoo) you never have to be concerned about changing service or upgrading computers. Others can direct you to the best on-the-road internet service.

On mail service, Escapees and the South Dakota service have both been mentioned. Both seem to do a great job (there is always the exception) and both seem to have varying pricing depending on the type service you require. I have visited Escapees operation and was quite impressed with it. There are other mail service groups out there. May I suggest you research them carefully.

We started out depending on very close friends and soon realized we would prefer paying for a mail forwarding service. We have been very happy with Mail Call USA. They have several branches and probably one in your area. We have a physical address with Mail Call and can receive packages as well as our regular mail. We have put many things on direct deposit and direct pay cutting down greatly on the amount of mail. There are many good mail forwarding services available. For our email we stayed with Earthlink which we had used way back when we were mindspring. We have found Earthlink or AOL seem to have the widest range of local coverage. Of course as others have mentioned you can go with a web based carrier for email such as yahoo, hotmail, etc. Good lick in your full timing. We full time from September to May spending the summer months in our vacation home in the mountains of WV. Sold the stick house two years ago and have never looked back. You gotta love it!!!

We really don't get much snail mail anymore. What we did was to switch everything to online. We get our insurance and gas bills online. We have a permanent address in Florida and have all of our snail mail temporarily forwarded to our PO Box in IL. When we leave to go back south, we will have the PO Box mail temporarily forwarded to FL. Works well for us as like I said, we have switched everything to online. We use hotmail for our email service.

I'm using AOL with a Verizon PC Card and it works fine and has pop-up blocker, spam filter, anti-virus, firewall etc. Like a previous poster stated, check with escapees or other forwarding services for other types of mail. I don't travel much because I still work, but I pay most of bills on line and they're available on line including your banking accounts. As far as magazines etc...they will have to be forwarded. I use a POBox for anything else.
