Possible High Country

Hello All,

New to RVs and towing in general so want to be as safe as possible. My wife and I really have been researching the Montana High Country intensely and are in the market in next 6-12 months. We have a 2017 Diesel F-250 SuperDuty and it has 10,000lb GVWR with Fifth Wheel Prep package, FX4 off road package and 3.55 rear axle. We also have LT275/65R/20 tires. Truck is rated for 14,000 lbs fifth wheel towing. The dry weight of truck I was told is 7,264 lbs. GCWR for the truck is 22,500 lbs. GAWR rear is 6340 and front is 5200. Just wondering which High Country model you kind folks think would be safe. We are confused by the numbers and math that we have gotten from different people.

lets take those numbers. truck weighs 7264 and 5vr weighs 14000. 14,000 would have a modest pin weight of 20% so 2800 weight carried in the bed of your truck bringing your truck to 10,064lbs does that number exceed you GVWR? trailer weight of 14000-pin weight 2800 + truck with pin weight = 21,264 this is your GCWR and under the 22,500 you listed so you are good there. the unknowns are if you are over your rear axle weight and over your payload capacity, but based on the numbers, you only have less then 250lbs for hitch fuel and passengers, so in my opinion you will be overloaded with a 14000lbs trailer.

Here is a weigh ticket today from my 2016 Ram 2500 with our 2017 3061RL Montana. We were loaded with 1/3 black water and both gray water tanks had about a 1/3 and 2/3 in the fresh water tank. I'm 360lbs over on my drivers..... forgot to say I have about 200lbs of tools behind my rear seats. The numbers written on the right are per Ram with my build.

Thanks I think I'd have to be in the 305 or 345 near 10000 or 11000 dry weight for things to work

Here are the easy formulas:

1. GCWR minus the weight of the truck (fully loaded ready to tow) = tow capacity

2. Weigh the truck, subtract that weight from the truck's GVWR = truck cargo capacity

Number 2 is what causes 250/2500 diesel trucks problems....pin weight is too high

Just bought 2017 MHC 344RL, tow vehicle is a 2014 F250, 6.7 diesel, 4x4 crew cab short bed. I added Anderson aluminum hitch with under bed mount and airbags but have not towed yet. Will tow this next month. So far the 344RL is working well as a nearly full timer for two and a dog. Working out a few bugs now. I will check my weight numbers against the info above also

Just went through all this in another tread. The dry weight of your truck means nothing, nor does the dry weight of the camper. What matters are the loaded weights of each when ready to tow. Load up your truck with all the people that will be typically going with your hitch installed
, full of fuel and anything else you mite take with you in the truck bed (generator/fire wood etc.). Now go to a scale and get your weights.

Depending upon which cab you have (reg/crew etc.) will determine the payload of your truck. Most do not have reg cab trucks. If yours is a crew cab the payload is in the 2000 lbs range.

With fuel/people/hitch/ wood etc, you are going to eat up maybe 1/2 that leaving you 1000 lbs for pin weight. Not any where near enough for a 14K fifth wheel.

You will need a 3500 truck for that load. Going to a dually and you can tow all most anything you want.

Just looked up the high county specs. All of them have pin weights listed at 22-2300+ #. All of them are over the payload of any cab configuration of an f-250

BStephIdaho, ford says your truck has a payload capacity of 1797 Lbs. The 344rl has a listed pin weight of 2265 lbs. You are nearly 500 lbs over weight just with the campers pin weight not to mention there is no one in the truck yet, no fuel/hitch of anything else in the truck. You maybe overweight with that set up possibly to the tune of 1500 LBS
