Can over filling the fresh water tank cause damage?

I am boondocking most of the time,so I filled my fresh water tank till I saw water coming out of the gravity fill.
I will not do that again, because I saw dripping water coming out of the under belly. Is there another over flow pipe on the fresh water tank, causing water go down to the under belly??
Could that water have caused damage in my trailer?

If you have a gravity fill, you should have two hoses to the fill position, one vent and the other the actual fill hose, plus the tank will have the hose that goes to the pump, so any of those hoses or their connections could be leaking, either loose or from critter damage. The only way to see is to drop the coroplast enough to check for what is leaking.

That is how I fill mine; stop when I see water coming out the vent. No issues. Almost always travel with a full tank.

I never drive with a full water tank. I just shoot for about 1/3 full (first light on the wall lights). Since the fresh tank gauges seem to be the only ones that work, I actually use them! LOL

When I purchased mine back in 2014 the dealer filled tank to overflow. During the tow home (50 mi) the tank split on the top. At that time it seemed to be a common problem. I believe they have switched to a different type of tank since then. Now I only tow with the tank 1/3 full.

I'm like scottz and AZ Traveler. I fill it until it comes out of the vent and I almost always travel with a full tank.

When I was down at El Paso I took my trailer to a Montana authorized RV repair shop, to find out why water was dripping from the underbelly after filling the tank, the repair technician said there is a overflow pipe where the water is dripping down to the underbelly. He said that I guess from experience. I am just trying to confirm on this forum if that is the case, that there is a overflow pipe. I am worried why the water is leaking from the underbelly after overfilling. It is not leaking the next day after filling the tank.

I have looked at mine, and installed water tanks in other trailers. There should be a fill hose, a vent, an outlet to your water pump, and a drain out the bottom. The vent is also the overflow, but it should be plumbed to the outside of the unit. If you are getting water out the underbelly; something is wrong. One of the hoses is leaking, broken tank, etc.

IMHO this is the worst thing you could possibly do. Think about it. With an empty tank there is nothing to slosh around. A full tank of water would not move around too much (the weight is holding it in place). but with 1/3-1/2 tank of water it is clanging and banging around with every start-stop and every turn you make trying to move the tank around in all directions. Trust me, I know how these tanks are mounted and will move around several inches, mostly side to side.

Water in Fresh Water Tank

I agree, plus the additional weight is a factor to consider. However, If you're between camping locations, overnight, why fill it til it's full, not to mention the possibility of having the issue of the OP?

I agree with ScottZ - there is a leak in some of the plumbing if it is dripping underneath. I also travel with a full tank - less water sloshing. I've driven tankers and a partially full tank causes many more issues than a full tank

Never a full tank. I carry just enough for flushing and washing to get to my first stop.

Thanks to all for the help. It's probably some loose connection from the hose going from the tank to the overflow went.
Are there any schematic pictures of that area ? I am trying to figure out how much of the Coroplast to remove,to get to the leak.

I thought so, but have never driven a tanker. Seems like it could get real exciting having thousands of gallons of liquid move from one side to the other as you turn.

I’ve driven doubles and tankers and I can tell you this, there’s a big difference between 70 gallons of water and 1800 gallons of #2 oil . Not so much in the turns but starting off and stopping . Holding your shift til the load comes back to hit the forward bulkhead is a big part of it.
70 gallons of water is over. 600 pads.
I’d rather carry that weight in fuel.
Just my thoughts.

Todays diesels will not even notice 600# of additional weight. It should not affect your drive/fuel MPG of anything else. I don't even bother hooking up to water at a campground unless I am there more than a week. We can go fully self contained for 9 days or so.

I guess it’s a matter of personal preference. Whatever works for you .
It’s camping and it supposed to be fun.
Happy travels.
