Where to get Metal straps?

I need to replace the metal straps that hold my propane tanks, but, I also need a much smaller one to hold my sewer tube assembly. What are the called?

Plumbers tape is what some use for strap material, but I don't know how stout it is. I'd guess you could have your propane tank straps which are probably stainless fabbed at a metal or welding shop with the same or similar clasp.

for the pipe i just used strapping from the construction area....the one with holes in it.

I replaced my propane strap. Got it at a dealer somewhere. They look like the originals but have the same problem as the originals. I am beginning to think the tank I have is slightly too large!!! These straps are about 1/2 inch short of reaching. So when I try to flip the lever to lock them tight, I have to use so much pressure the lever starts to bend. Strange situation!

For the pipe: go to the plumbing section of the hardware store and they will have hanging strap (yes with the holes in it). Its about 3/4" wide and has holes drilled in it about every 1" or so. Handy for a lot of different applications.


For the propane tank: In a pinch a ratcheting tie down strap, HD zip ties or even bailing wire works.


Point here is that if you own an RV you really need some universal fix it stuff with you at all times!!!

I put gorilla tape over the metal strap to stop rust marks on the tank.

You can also keep a light coat of lithium grease on the straps and hinges to prevent rust and also makes snapping and unsnapping the straps easier. Lithium grease repels moisture better than other grease or oil.

Upon inspection of our new trailer I found the same situation with the LP tank straps. They were soooo close but would not close even with lots of pressure and starting to bend the tabs. Initially the walk thru tech said not to worry about it....they wouldn't come loose. I disagreed so they ordered new ones. When they came in I just pulled in front of a bay and the tech came out to put the new ones on.....looked just like the ones being removed. Took maybe 15-20 minutes to remove the tanks and the old straps and put the new ones on - screwed right back into the same holes as the old ones. These straps closed perfectly and secured the tanks. When I asked the tech what the difference was; what they ordered vs what was on there, he didn't have an answer, just said he guessed the OE was a "little too short".

I know that doesn't tell you much about the how/why of the short straps but it told me that I didn't have a tank that was built proportionately wrong (which I thought) - it just had the wrong straps by maybe 1/2". I would just measure the existing straps and start looking for some that were just a bit longer - even ask the dealer if that is an option. I did not feel comfortable or safe with the tanks partially secured considering some of the terrible highways we travel on that jostle the trailer all over.

I had to replace a propane tank because the screw used to hold the strap had too large of a head. It gouged quite deeply and I felt the tank was unsafe. Thanks Keystone.

Hi,
I switched to 30 lb aluminum tanks and they were a little "snug" on the straps. I pulled off the worst offender and noticed some extra mounting holes. Once I figured out a better pattern for using the mounting bolts, I was able to eliminate the "too short" problem. I did the same on the other strap, and was able to resolve the problem by using some of the extra holes. Problems solved !

When I replaced a failed strap I found that the screws don’t tighten all the way tight against the wall. You might get the center screw fully tight but leave screws on either side of center out a ways so the strap curves around the cylinder. Then, if the strap is a little loose, tighten the screws a bit until the strap is how you want it.

My straps on my 30lb bottles were always a little hard to close. Finally broke the clamp on one so went to Camper Clinic and bought a new strap which came with a new clamp. The new strap was just a little loose so I took an old bicycle tire tube and cut a short length and wrapped it around the new strap to take up the slack. Is now tight and clamp closes nicely.

The sewer hose install issue is easily solved with large hose clamps. I suppose you could do the same for propane tanks.
