What Would You Do?
Talked about my buddy before reference G614 tires. He has a SOB Toy Hauler Fiver and they just took off last week for a 7 month trip. His truck is a Chevy SRW 3500 diesel, and I am guessing between a 2008 and 2009 with just over 80,000 miles. His extended warranty just expired. When they got to Baton Rouge his tranny went out and he is being towed to Chevy dealer. So what do you do? Do you fix it and continue the trip, trade it off, start searching for a slightly used diesel? He said he will know more tomorrow when they tear into it.

I'd also fix it.

I think it can be repaired cheaper than replaced, unless he wants a newer truck, then good luck!

The quickest easiest and cheapest thing is to repair it and be back on the road in couple days. But if he wants a new truck he has an excuse now....

Yes, trade that ol' bucket of bolts. I saw that new dually that Tom S. picked up and it's mighty tempting...

I put $9,000 into my Dodge right after warranty expired. I was going to trade but they would not deal on price and I figured they were going to give me $10,000 for my truck.... They told me I could put in a new tranny cheaper then what my bill was.

If they trade it, they will get nothing. Trade in is always bad. If he wants to get some money out if truck, fix it and sell on craigslist. You can get the best deal on new truck, without trade. Great rebuilt tranny deals on line. Just send back core. Good mechanic can swap out. Did that with a Ford. About half of what transmission shop quoted me. Even got better heavy duty tranny. Might just hold on to truck another 50k miles or more, then sell!

Your truck has a 5 year / 100,000 mile warranty, whichever comes first. Depending on when you bought it, the warranty may already be expired. My 06 had the same warranty. When I sold it last month, it had 67K on it but the warranty had expired long ago, in December 2010 because it was purchased in December of 2005.

Before I did anything, I'd find out how much it will cost to fix it...then decide a course of action.

Would be interesting to know the cause of the failure-Allison's are normally bulletproof.

My Dodge 2004 2500 out of warranty tranny died 3yrs ago. $3500 installed with a 3 yr or 100,000 mile warrant Rebuilt Jasper transmission. We where pleased with it. Bought a new truck a few years later because I wanted a new truck. The Jasper warranty transferred with the truck.

Just heard back from my buddy. Chevy dealer has had it for day and a half. They "think" if could be a locked up torque converter from electrical solenoid inside tranny. They are not sure but they can't fix it. They want to take it to a diesel repair business tomorrow. My buddy is going to start making his own calls. I am not sure how big of a Chevy dealer this is, but I would not be happy if my Ford dealer told me he "didn't think" he could fix my truck! I didn't ask him but his warranty must have timed out.

He got the truck to a shop that does all diesel repair. They are backed up but will look at it soon. To add insult to injury, the RV park they are in needed to move them to another spot. A fellow camper said he would do it for them with his DRW. He hooked up and moved it to their new spot and got it backed in perfectly. My buddy gets out and goes to open the door for his 6-point leveling system. The goofy control panel is on the right side of this SOB. The helpful neighbor pulls the release pin on the hitch when my buddy has his front legs about half way down. Yep, you guessed it....the triple axle 17,000 pound Toy Hauler rolled back and BAM! Didn't do much damage to the truck. Scratched under the Toy Hauler pretty good. The 6-point leveling system leveled okay after that so he is pretty sure that it was not damaged. Obviously communication was an issue here, but other than that I can't understand why anyone would not chaulk tires prior to releasing the pin on the hitch, or why someone would not allow the front legs to at least take a little pressure off the hitch prior to releasing the pin on the hitch.
