Ok true story! I went south to Chico today. Returning to Redding I passed the Cottonwood weigh station at 5:00 pm, not towing. A CHP was leaving the facility as I passed the station. I will tell you, for a brief second I got that "I going to get pulled over feeling "! He came around me slowed a bit and started to pass. He turned on the lights! "Bad word in my thought bubble! I slowed down and it was the same Sargent who spoke to me Sunday ! Big smile on face as he passed me "gave me the thumbs up" turned off lights! I could see him laughing! Evidently he recognized the truck! Guess living in smaller town has its advantages! Took me couple miles to laugh.... Lol

I visited the CHP Office in Santa Maria, Ca today. I spoke with the Commercial Enforcement Officer about stopping at scales. He said Yes, a truck over 11,500 lbs is no longer rated as a pickup. It is now a Motor Truck ( in the same catagory as a semi tractor ). He said that I was required to stop if NOT pulling a 5th wheel rv. Just the truck alone, I'm required to stop. Next words were you stop at one scale with it, the weigh master will tell you that you don't have to come in, the next one may send a patrol car for you. .....
Also he said the law has been changed where a CDL holder that gets a citation now can go to traffic school, whereas in the past few years before they could not attend traffic school.

So a CHP Commercial Enforcement Officer thinks that a non-commercial truck has to scale just because it could be registered for over 11,500 pounds. Maybe he should just limit his advise to what his title says "commercial vehicles". It just does not make sense to me, but I have never lived in, nor visited California, only read about it.

JandC, He does not "think that I have to stop" "he knows" and showed me in the 2 1/2 inch regulation book where it is required. He says that that rule may be recinded, but if you are towing with a F-350 in the commercial realm, you must stop. Bill

The States can make up their own rules and if you live in that State you must comply. It has no effect to those that do not live in those States. We are NOT by Federal CDL laws a commercial vehicle in any State unless towing for hire.

All pick-ups in California have to be registered as commercial vehicles and in addition to the registration fees, also a weight fee is payed, just like a heavy commercial truck. This includes 1/2 ton pick-ups too. Doesn't matter if the truck never carries anything but personal items. Just a way to collect additional money for the political machine in that state, because it doesn't look like much of the money is being spent on the roads.

I know a Va state Senitor, he says every time you pass a law you step on somebody's toes. I think Madison has got it right.

Was in a meeting thirty years or more ago, with a State Senator from California. He was speaking at a town hall type meeting. He ask the attendees, what he could do to make California legislature more effective. A gentlemen from the back of the room had a novel idea. He said " why not pass a law that says, before any new law could be passed, an old law, would have to be taken off the books"!

The country and the states are better off when their legislatures are NOT in session.
