Towing Monty on a windy day.

have towed a TT on some pretty windy days but this new Monty is much higher and longer. so is there a wind MPH to not tow in? I know this is pretty much up to me but was wondering when it gets dicey pulling a big rig like this in the wind. don't want to end up on my side at some point.

We have had days when we knew there were side winds but didn't realize how bad till we tried to get out of the truck and had a hard time opening the door. As far as actual wind speeds I really don't know, I just know we have been in some fairly high winds with no problem

It is much easier to tow a 40 foot fiver than drive a 40 foot motorhome with a strong crosswind

Fivers take side wind a lot better than a TT. Hitch weight concentrated over the rear axle instead of behind your rear bumper makes the difference. Common sense comes into play here ... when you are noticeably fighting the steering wheel ... pull off the roadway where you won't bother others. If you know the wind is going to howl via the weather man ... don't start out. I'm in Kansas where it's windy most all the time. Just off the hip ... over 25 - 30 mph wind just isn't much fun to pull in.

Living in Texas wind is more the norm then calm days....when we had a TT it used to get hairy on a crowded interstate on windy days. But with the 5th wheel we don't really notice it. Even at 30-40 mph winds which we get quite often, we may feel a nudge now and then. We have also driven thru 2 major storms. One thru Houston on the tail end of a tornado with enough rain to flood the interstate with 6 inches of water and it just plowed right on thru it..... I was more worried about the idiots driving around me then I was with the trailer which tracked right behind me. I'm thinking it would have to get to 50-60 mph before it would be dangerous....don't know cause we haven't been out when it was that windy yet.....After 60 then it's time to fill the tanks, face into the wind and put the jacks down and hope for the best.......Hey wasn't that Toto??? OH look, flying monkeys....................

thanks. figured the fiver be tough in the wind compared to TT. will find out this coming year heading down I25 to Walsenburg Colorado which is always windy or through South park Colorado. swore a saw a
cow flying one day there LOL

Like most everyone else, I have been surprised at how little high winds affect towing the Monte. Don't realize just how high until we stop and get out. Was following a large class C one time and he was all over the road. I was trying to figure out if the guy was drunk or just a very poor driver. Then we made a rest stop and it became clear just hard the cross wind was blowing. I had hardly felt it while driving. And I have an SRW.

On windy days a dually is much more stable than a SRW truck. Winds need to be on the upside of 30 mph before I decide to take the day off.

We draw the line at 40mph, because if that's the sustained winds gusts could be a lot higher.

I agree that the Montana pulls MUCH better in crosswinds. Our TT was a white knuckle tow in winds.

My advice is don't put a number in your head. You'll know when to pull off the road. It will likely be later than if you were pulling that old TT. Trust your instincts.

I've pulled in 40mph winds and have done alright, but only if I can't avoid it. It makes me a little nervous when I see the ball on the level I have mounted on the hitch start going a inch or two to the lee side of the wind. I agree with the others that anything higher I would definitely avoid.

My little 2955 RL I never felt the wind but in my 323 High Country I have had the wind to move it around. I must have hit a gust of at least 60 to 70 MPH. A 30 to 40 MPG wind you don't notice that. My 2955 was 32 feet long and the 323 is 36 feet.

We have pulled in some pretty moderate winds. I never had problems staying in my own lane and I have never had to "fight" the wheel. Burned a ton more diesel though.

What I have noticed, which has already been mentioned, is the others out there on really windy days. It seems to me that most Class A's, many TT's, and even some lightly loaded or empty semis have a much harder time in cross wind conditions than many fivers.

I have pulled in some pretty good winds and have not had any handling problems. It will cause you to burn a lot more diesel.

That's true I forgot about your fuel mileage. That may be the determining factor on towing in the wind, can you afford it lol lol lol ....You can watch your fuel gauge plummet lol lol

We have pulled in 40 mph cross winds with gusts up to 70 mph. Not fun driving and would not do it for a long stretch but we got out of it in an hour and kept on going. I was surprised at how stable the trailer and truck(SRW) were at the time.

The winds along 25 can get very strong. The rule of thumb here is when they post high wind warnings, either slow down or don't drive. Between Cheyenne and Fort Collins, you always see photos of semis blown over. When the winds get 40 mph and higher, it would be good to start watching closely. JMHO. We were on I25 one day when I had to bungee the steps up because the wind kept blowing them open.

There is a place in I77, Fancy Gap, that is like John said. If there are high wind warnings posted DO NOT take your camper. All the wind is funneled up the interstate from North Carolina up the mountain to Virginia. I had a 2X10 6 feet long that was lying flat in the bottom of my truck get blown out. Not only semis get blow over but a police officer was blown over the mountain. It is dangerous!!!!
