Who tows with SB SRW truck

Just wondering if anybody tows there Montana with a short bed SRW TRUCK. My current truck is a 2017 F-250 SB 4x4 6.7 diesel with Anderson ultimate fifth wheel. Dealer already told me about warranty being voided with the Anderson hitch. I just purchased a 2022 Montana 3121RL and don’t feel I have enough truck for it. I haven’t even brought it home yet because of issues my wife found. Should be ready tomorrow. It’s 3 hours away and worry it will bottom out my suspension. I want to buy a f-350 SB SRW with a few bells and whistles. Any members hear pull with a F-350 SRW SB truck. I am stressed out thinking I have to have a long bed or dually.
Thanks

Not a Ford, but I tow my 3100rl with a 2017 SB 3500 Chevy. I also use an Anderson hitch. I previously put about 5,000 miles on the same trailer with a 2005 F250 with no issues. If you, like I, don’t travel with a lot of cargo at near max gross weight of your trailer then a SB 1 ton should pose no problems, IF YOU ARE DILIGENT about remembering that even with the Anderson in it’s most rearward position you are still susceptible to hitting the cab.

And now for those who think you need nothing less than a class 8 tractor!

An F250 with that trailer will likely be overloaded. Plenty of folks do it without regard to weight or safety. Depending on which F350 it could get close to its GVWR. Weighing the loaded truck and trailer is the definitive answer to your question. Search the forum and you can find plenty of discussion on this topic.

We had a SB Ram and didn’t have issues until I started having a Kayak on the roof of the truck. My cantilevered rack created an issue. A Superglide hitch and some Timbrens are a lot cheaper than a new truck. Is a long bed 1 ton better? Probably, but you have the shortest, lightest Montana (not counting High Country). Good luck.

The benefit of SRW vs DRW is stability and in some respects load handling. However, I could be in error on this factoid, but I think the only truck that comes in DRW SB is a Ram 3500. I can't say for certain but I don't think Ford or Chevy has produced a DRW SB, unless you have a way to special order/special build which would cost MUCH more than usual if it is possible...check through "CarGuru's" inputting your type of truck being looked for and see what shows up...if you're really considering replacing your existing TV.

If you decide to buy a new truck, if you don’t already know this, the cargo carrying capacity of the trucks vary widely depending on configuration. Bed length, cab configuration, tire size etc play into how much weight you can carry. Shop carefully if you want to stay legal.
Fwiw, when we scaled our rig on the way home from the dealer on day one, the weight on the truck was 2720 pounds more than it was when scaled on the way to the dealer, about 400 pounds more than our 3121 pin weight is listed from keystone. That was a totally empty trailer except for a 25’ power cord in the cargo bay and one battery in the battery bay. Also included our B&W Companion. The propane tanks were full but I seem to recall that is supposedly included in the pin weight spec. When we load up that cargo bay and outfit the bedroom, we are close to the cargo capacity (includes everything in the truck including passengers, but not fuel) listed on the door sticker, which is 4061, and the gvwr which is 12400. After having the trailer loaded the way we use it, I added Timbrens to level up the truck. I am very happy with this setup. Good luck with your new trailer, we love ours.

You need a 350, preferably a LB dually. However, I have a SB SRW and it's okay. I added airbags to get it level (not to increase capacity). You'll probably need a sliding hitch, and I recommend an auto slider. The front corner cut-outs are only good to a point. I tried it without a slider and had a minor oops.

A long bed dually one ton dually is the optimum choice unless you want a 450. Many many folks tow just fine with a one ton SRW SB diesel. I did have to add air bags to my dually because of rear sag.

I tow with a SB 2016 Ram 3500. We only tow a few times a year as we tend to long term for 4-6 months at a time. We use a sliding hitch, sometimes we need it, sometimes we don't. When we need it, we really need it. We went with the short bed as my wife uses it as her daily driver to hospitals and some of them do not have parking for longer vehicles. When hooking the trailer up there is next to no squat on the rear of the truck. I had our big rig tractor friend help spec out and pick up the truck and trailer, wheels, tires, suspension, etc.

I think a 2500 is too light for this rig. I think your total weight on the rig is around 16,x00 lb. Most use at least 20% for pin weight which is 3200. I don't think any 2500 has much more than 3000 bed weight, but that is without passengers, a hitch and fuel - 600-700 more.

I have a lighter Mountaineer, but still has a 2500 lb pin weight and we are about 4-500 over weight. I don't worry so much because my axle weights are slightly under the rating and Chevy 2500 vs 3000 used to be (my model) have everything the same as 3500 except one extra spring on the rear. When hooked up, I hardly sag down at all over unhooked, so I figure I am ok.

I'm towing a 2020 3120RL with a 2019 F-350 SB SRW King Ranch. Weight sticker says 3351 payload. With about 2000# cargo in the trailer and normal load in the truck, including hitch, I'm right at the payload spec. When I'm carrying fresh, I assume a bit lighter since the tank is behind the axles. When I'm carrying waste, I assume I'm a bit over weight, but I've never had any problem with overload contact. Used to tow lighter 5th's with an F-150. This truck is night and day difference in regard to stability, ease of driving, and overall feel. It works great for us!

Many of us use a SB truck without issue. There are various preferences regarding the best hitch for that application. Some like the auto-sliding hitches because they work well in allowing you to back without worry, even if you're not paying attention to the distance to your truck. Personally, I just don't like all the added weight.

I've used the Andersen Hitch since we bought our trailer so IF we have a structural issue they would still consider my claim. So far no problems and I don't anticipate any. I've never come close to hitting the cab of the truck and prefer the ease of use and light weight.

Bottom line, it's very possible to safely tow and back your trailer with a SB. You are still the one who has to pay attention. The biggest issue is making sure you have the right truck to safely manage the payload.

You may want to check your specs not sure on 2017 but 2015 srw has same tow rating in the F250 & F350 models

The F-250 and the 3121 are fine, not sure about the implications of the hitch. I have the same setup except I have a BW Companion slider. I will say though that I do not have a generator or Washer/dryer and I tow with tanks empty as we go to campgrounds rather than boondock.

The tow rating may be fine but the GVWR is different.

How many pounds are you under on GVWR?

We travel with a SRW SB and have no issues. The truck and trailer weigh in just under the trucks max cargo weight and it handles fine. Like others have said I suspect your F250 might be over it's max weight so a 1 ton truck is a good idea. I also have a Companion slider hitch but truth be told I've never had to extend the slide. Best of luck in your truck shopping.

Make sure your numbers are right before buying a new truck. People can do a lot of things wrong, but it may not be the correct way. Go to (BTBRV) Big Truck Big RV on YouTube he has a lot of good info about truck weight rating and what you need to tow safety.
