Heat pump clicking noise

We’ve been using the heat pump at night for about a month. We leave it on all the time and it only runs at night. Starting yesterday it began making a clicking noise (made me think on/off, on/off, etc.) as it warmed up in the afternoon. I turned it off at the thermostat and it quit making the noise. Has anyone encountered this problem? I did a search on the forum but came up empty.

Thanks

Our 2018 HC 331RL started making the clicking sound this morning as the temperature rose from low 50s overnight up into the 70s this morning. I just turned the thermostat off for now.

Is yours still clicking, or did you find a remedy?

I never did find a cause or remedy.

The clicking noise you are hearing is the relays inside the control board module for that A/C unit... its usually a telltale sign that sooner or later you will need to replace the gateway because it is going to fail... when it does the unit will not work..

And if this zone also controls the furnace then when the relays fail you wont be able to operate the furnace either.

link to control board from Trekwood... dont buy from them.. shop around and get a better price.. using this link for the image

ChuckS, can you replace just the relays or does the complete control board need to be replaced? The other thing I’ve noticed is the heat pump is not very efficient. It doesn’t produce much heat. I’ve read these Dometic ACs stop producing heat when the temp drops into the 40s.

We usually run our fireplace elec heat 24/7 when temps are below 40 degrees. Our heat pump still puts out some heat below 40. That will get it up to comfortable temp in the living area with both running. At night we then turn on small stand-up elec heater for the bedroom. This method works for us and saves on the propane. One time I started the heat pump when temp was in low 30's at home just to see what would happen. After 3 hours the temp raised about 20 degrees but that was all it would raise the temp.

Your RV should have either the Dometic Penguin II HP OR the Dometic NXT series HP..

Neither of these will provide heat below about 40 degrees. There is a sensor on the roof inside the unit that will not allow the HP to function although the fan will run

The control board for either is relatively low cost at around $55 for either.. they are different PNs

Images for Penguin II and NXT series control boards..

The relays could be replaced but not worth the effort in my opinion due to low cost of the board..

Also IF there is a gateway it also has relays and these will chatter when the gateway is going bad..
