Unusual Tire Wear

Any tire experts out there? I have some serious wear on both the inside and outside edges of both tires on my front axle; as if they were underinflated. The tires on the rear axle look ok. These tires have about 16k miles on them and are run at 110psi. The trailer was aligned at the same time the tires were replaced. I'll probably replace them but would like to know the problem so I don't ruin another set.

Our Sailun tires are doing that and our previous G 614’s did that too. I’m thinking it’s just from scrubbing during turns, and in your photos it looks like the bulk of the tread is contacting the road, except for the edges.

It is not just visual. It almost feels like cupping on the edge. I feels pretty bad, I don't think I'll run them any longer.

And why only the tires on the front axle?

It does resemble scrubbing from turning but a bit worse. I would measure the axle to ensure it is 90 degrees to the frame. One measurement would include distance between the tires on both sides. Scrubbing could happen if the wheels are not pointed straight forward. Is it an illusion in the pic or is a U bolt crooked?

You might check that bearings are tight and no excessive end play too. It would bother me if they are wearing on both inner and outer edges of the same tire and it was not from scrubbing in tight turns.

If your trailer is not pulling level front to back it will cause tires to wear differently axle to axle.

I can see the cupping on the outer edge in the first photo, too, and I can't explain it. Scrubbing can happen only on one axle, but I think something else is going on. I would take it to a competent shop for evaluation before giving up, because there's a lot of tread life left on those tires.

Al 4 tires are doing the same thing, uneven wear and cupping, not worried about it. They`ve gone 3 years and jI`ll ust replace them when they age out. I run near perfectly level, don`t know if that means anything

I had MorRyde look at mine during the rally. Showing the same wear pattern. The MorRyde techs said it looks like tow-in is out. Mine are aging out (2017 date). I do have the IS on my 373RD

All four of mine look like that and I'm at 19,000 miles. Also 6 years old so just replace them.

Wear on both outside edges of the tread typically indicates under inflation. But if these have been at the max pressure their entire life the other cause could be them being overloaded.

Are you close to max weight capacity?

I have 6400 on the front axle, 5750 on the rear axle. Tires are rated at 4080 each and have been at max pressure (110) their entire life.

Mine are doing the same

I have the Sailuns, and I run at near max inflation, and mine look identical to your photos. I have followed this blog for several years. This subject shows up from time to time with all the same logical causes and solutions.....but nothing has worked for me. Good luck.

Sounds like the way it will be. I still have to go out and measure axle to axle to make sure they are square with each other. Then it's time for me to repack the wheel bearings so I'll make sure no issues there. That one u-bolt is a little crooked, but it is tight and I don't think a problem. When I put the tires back on, I'll rotate front to rear and call it a day. I don't think the tires need to be replaced yet.

It just seems odd to me that I put 13k on these tires with no noticeable wear and now this wear in the last 3k.

I'll repost after I've taken measurements.

That much difference between the axle weights (650lbs) might explain why the fronts are wearing faster. Can you tell if its towing nose heavy, and if so, raise the hitch head or lower the pin box? OTOH, just rotating front to back will give you some more life.

No way to know if it is "nose heavy", F-450 does not seem to care; it has always weighed this much. Not unexpected; I have a generator and all of my storage is in the front. The pin box is already at max height (due to height of truck bed rails, and the purchase of a $2000 tailgate last year, but that's a different story). The trailer now tows a little nose high which I think would put more weight on the rear axle. The weights I quoted were checked before I raised my pin box one hole (last one) so there may not be that much axle weight difference. I plan to rotate.

Yes, both, thank you. However, the wear I am seeing does not match the description of "channel/river" wear.

It seems to me that if you are now running nose high, that the rear axle would be more tightly planted on the pavement and the front axle tires would scrub on turns which might be why it is showing that wear on those front tires. I used axle blocks to level our rig out which seems to have made the tire wear a little more even, besides eliminating a lot of dragging on the back end of the rig.
