Inverter Install Question

Those of you who have installed larger 2000W+ Inverters in your rigs.

Do you have the negative cable going through a battery disconnect, terminal block or any other type of splice/connection or do you have it wired directly from your battery terminal or shunt to the inverter?

Of course its a given that positive side will be fused or use a DC breaker.

I have my inverter wired through a negative bus bar that then passes through a shunt so I can monitor the system voltage and current.

If you even think you might want to run an AC unit off your inverter I would recommend a 3000w inverter.

And a BIG Battery bank. Just say you have a small efficient AC that only draws 10 amp @120 AC, that means approx 100 amps draw at 12 DC.

The reason I asked the question was I happened to be camping near a couple having a complete solar install done. I talked with the installer and he walked me through his install.

He highly recommended going straight from battery to inverter. No disconnects, bus bars or any other terminals other than positive side fused or DC breaker.

Like you guys I have mine fused on positive side to bus bar. Then straight to 2000W inverter. Negative side is battery-shunt-disconnect-bus bar-inverter. I was simply wondering if others went straight to larger inverters as he recommended.

BTW- I can easily start and run our 15K Btu A/C with Micro Air Easy Start from our Samlex 2000W inverter. I've only ran it for ten minutes or so at a time just to see if it would indeed run it. I have no intentions of trying use it for that purpose though. That's the job of our Honda 3000 Genny.

I cringed when I read that. While you can do it, no pro I have talked to would dare suggest it as recommended. Busbars are the way to go and a battery disconnect is essential. That couple is setting themselves up for potential issues later.

Checkout explorist.life for excellent "soup to nuts" vids on solar.

Recently purchased a 2021 High Country 294RL. The trailer is advertised as being pre-wired for an inverter and it has four or five outlets inside marked as being wired for inverted AC power. Anyone know what the pre-wiring consists of or where this wiring exists? I see some romex on the overhead of the pass through, with a clear plastic connector of some kind but no other wiring that looks "interesting." I've contacted several Keystone authorized service departments with no luck and have written and called Keystone customer service several times with no responses whatsoever (seems to be a common theme!). Gee, I sure would have liked to wire this trailer myself at the factory!!!

A disconnect on the DC side is not required but you will be very happy if you put one in every time you have to perform work on the system. An electrical professional would always install a means of disconnecting. The overcurrent protection on the other hand is required to protect the wire. A fuse can also serve as a means of lockout/disconnecting as well.

The Victron Lynx system provide bus work and fusing in a very clean and neat package.

That romex with the quick connect is the place to tie in an inverter. HC runs a Magnum CSW2012 with a divorced transfer switch but you can use a CSW2012HX with the internal transfer if you want to run a remote. You'll need battery cables, disconnect and fuse for the DC side.
