Ram dually with Curt R20-can I reach it?

Happy Thanksgiving! Ordering a Ram Mega Cab dually. I have one year old Curt Q20 on the R20 slider that’s in my current F350 SRW. I’m wondering if I’ll even be able to reach the handle on the slider over the dual fenders. I know you don’t know how tall or flexible I am but I can definitely reach it fine in my SRW but wondering how that’s going to go with the dually. I’ll get the 17” tires and air suspension. Anyone do this?

For that matter, I don’t really know exactly how to convert this hutch from a Ford with no puck to a Ram with the factory puck, or if that even makes sense. All advice on both questions is appreciated.

You could consider one of those steps that hang on the tire. That's what I'm going to do, and I'm 6/1 but I'm pretty sure I won't be able to reach much in the bed over those humongous fenders.

I used to step on the outside tire and pull myself up, but for some unknown reason the tire kept getting taller and taller and I kept getting older. So ordered one of the steps that fits over the tire, works good.

You are in for mental anguish as far as trying to adapt the old rail mount hitch into the newer puck systems especially with the new trucks sitting so high compared to your 2011. Although mine is a Ford ... the puck system is nearly the same. There are two manufacturers out there that make an adaptor that sits on the pucks, then you sit your current Curt hitch on top of that. They are Curt and Reese. Trouble is with the ride height of your new truck and the 2" of added height on the adaptors ... your fiver will be considerably nose high even in your Curt's lowest inbed position. I tried the Curt adaptor with my rail mount Anderson hitch since the Curt adaptor is maybe 1/2" shorter than the Reese. The whole setup was terrible with alot of noise each time I stopped and started up (and I did adjust the shims on the Curt adaptor as directed). I talked to ETrailer about the clunking and was told it was inherent due to the adaptor made to fit multiple truck models. I sent it back and ended up buying the Anderson goose ball mount pyramid only since I already had the Anderson pin box adaptor on my fiver. I still had to raise my pin box 2 holes to get my setup where I was comfortable with it. From talking to a couple of others that tried the Reese and Curt adaptors with their Q20 Curts ... they said had they to do it over again ... they'd just buy a hitch designed for the puck system and sell their old ones privately. That's my recent experience ... others mileage may vary.

As far as reaching the lever ... when I had a Curt, I just stepped in the rim of my dually which worked well for me and I'm only 5'9".

I use a step ladder or step on the tire; trying to avoid scratching the truck fenders.

I would not use an adapter. A new hitch that will fit the puck system will set you back about $500; not too much considering what you have riding on it. Also, it is very nice to have a flat bed when you pull your hitch out of the pucks.

For what it's worth, I like B&W companion hitches; just my two cents.

Scottz I don't think you've been shopping for fifth wheel hitches lately unless you were talking used that somebody wanted to be rid of. You'll have to put another $500 to $800 on top of what you posted.

I had the same problem with my Curt A16 hitch when I traded trucks. Went from no hockey puck to hockey puck truck. Curt makes an adapter assembly that fits in your new truck, you install your hitch into the adapter. Works great!

Thank you, I was worried about all that. I want a LOW truck why are they so stinking tall. Will just get a new hitch.

69Roadrunner .... with that new a TALL truck, how did you get by using the Curt adaptor and not having the front of your fiver about 4" nose high? Also ... didn't the adaptor and hitch sound like a steel yard's electromagnetic crane dropping a load of steel every time you started and stopped? Just wondering since my experience was your exact opposite.

I’m pulling with a mega cab with the puck system myself. I’ve pulled thousands of miles with a gooseneck but this is my first fifth wheel. After seeing the price of the sliders, I just went on Craigslist and found a guy that went from a mega cab to a Ford 450 and had a Puck mounted pullrite. $1200 and 5 minutes when I picked it up, ready to pull.

My step bars go back to the front of my fenders and I’m able to pull the handle from there, though a bit awkward. A foldable step stool , kept in the front rv compartment , can cover a lot of uses.
