Winterize

Delayed going south a couple of months. Never had to winterize before. Today drained low points, fresh water tank and ice maker line. Drained water heater. Turned BY Pass on, put hose on Winterize Inlet and put other end in jug of antifreeze. Turned on pump and went inside to open faucets. Pump came on, but would not pump the antifreeze. Can anyone offer any advice. I had the antifreeze on the basement and even held the jug level with the inlet.

I did finally pour the antifreeze in the fresh tank and turned on the pump..it moved the antifreeze and I winterized the unit, but I want to understand what I am doing wrong, or what the issue is with the unit. Thanks…don

I've never bothered with the antifreeze since I use the unit during the winter, but most have said you have to hold the bottle above the inlet port to create a siphoning action to help the pump. Also, some have said they used 2 rubber hose washers in the inlet to get a good seal.

A couple of helpful hints. I cut an old water hose so it is very short. If I set a bottle of antifreeze in the convenience center, the hose goes to the bottom of the jug. I have also had to use two hose washers on the inlet. It needs to be a very tight seal. You also need to flip the valve to winterize. Hope this helps.

Take the cone washer out of the winterize port, turn it around so the tip pushes the plastic check valve open, the pump can't pull it open. I have never had to use 2 washers. Hook up your hose to the port and put the other end of hose in the jug, switch the winterize valve. You do not need to lift the jug, you don't lift the fresh water tank to start pumping water. Remember to switch the cone washer back around when done.

Exactly how I do ours though don;t need 2 hose washers (yet). Any small air leak in the intake line will not allow antifreeze to be sucked in the system. That inlet hose needs to be tight and that fitting can be tough to turn. Another thing - ours had a wire mesh strainer integral with the rubber washer in the inlet fitting. It was plugged solid as new from Keystone. It's long gone.

I ended up needing two hose washers because my particular hose adaptor didn’t seal against the single hose washer in the winterize port before the threads ran out on the connection. The second washer took care of that. I had no problem with the pump not being able to pull open the check valve.

Most helpful advice as we worked for an hour trying to do winterize. Something so simple. Thank you so much for the tip!

I use an air compressor and blow the water out of the lines. Then pour antifreeze down the traps.
