RV extension cord junction cover?

Has anyone found a weatherproof cover for the connection between the RV power cord and a 50 amp extension cord? I'm plugged in at home, and worried about another 45 minute gully washer like we had yesterday before I brought the MHC home!

Because I reconfigured for a 50 amp service, I haven't had to use an extension cord on my Montana at home. But when we had our 30 amp Keystone Outback travel trailer, I had to use an extension several times, depending on how and where I parked on the property.

What I did, I put the connection between the two cords on a cinder block so the actual connection was 8 inches off the ground. Then placed a plastic bucket over the top of the block to keep rain out. I did this for years, in some awful standing water and awful torrential rains.

Some time ago, on a different RV forum, I saw were someone took a plastic Ammo container, cut two U shaped holes near the top on each end so the cords would slip in them . The actual connection was in the box, and then the lid could be snapped closed, creating a seal. That's where I got the idea from to just use a bucket over a cinder block.

I found a waterproof box on Amazon, half the size of a shoebox that I use at home for outdoor lighting. It can handle a 50a cord and plug. $20.

Thanks-- I saw a bunch designed for small house cords, but didn't see any that would seal that were big enough for the fist-sized plugs. I looked on the Walmart site but wasn't sure theirs were big enough or had cutouts big enough for the 50 amp cords. I'll take another look.

I put a plastic box over the connection between the 50 amp cord and the Hughes Autoformer this last winter. I went to Wally World and found a clear plastic box that the connection of the two would fit in. I cut out two slots for the cords to fit through and placed the connection in the box, put the lid on the box and used Gorilla tape to seal the slots and around the cords and also taped the top of the box down so the wind would not blow it off if it came up. Worked great and no water got into the connection at all.

I put do-electric grease at base of plug to prevent moisture getting into plug and then cover

I saw this, but a reviewer said it was not sealed and just sat on top of it and the connection rested on the wet ground. Did u figure out a way around this?

It is completely open on the bottom, so it won't help during a gully washer unless you put it on a block. It does hold the joined cords above the ground. Our back yard is former farm land, so it absorbs rain fairly well, and we've had a couple of Nor'Easter deluges already this year, and my Watchdog EMS hasn't blipped once.

A couple of places we stay have their electric hookups at the very front of the pad ( friend's driveways, family side yard). I hated using an extension cord. Our generator is in the bed of the truck, which meant dragging out the extension when we boondocked, too. Between moisture concerns, possible theft and current drop I wanted a better solution.


I added another lifeline plug at the front of the fiver and along with a manual transfer switch. I've been amazed at how often it's come in handy having a plug at either end. All told, it was about $250 and has saved me a ton of headaches.

I bought two ammo boxes, standard size, not extra big, at Scheel's. Cut slots in the corners to fit the heavy duty 50Amp cord. Slots had to be about 3"-4" deep to allow the top to seal (see pictures). Looks like this will work, as long as I protect the cord from the sharp edges of the slots with tape either on the box or the cord, and after sealing the lid use a good duct tape like Gorilla tape to seal the upper part of the slot. I think I will just permanently Gorilla tape the surge protector/ground checker tail to the RV cord, rather than using one of these boxes every time I hook up at the Park. This ammo box will do the trick, I think, to keep out water or snow from the hot plug connections when hooked up at home to the extension cord. Thanks for all the help, everyone.
