Bay Door locks and keys

I have been reading on line that bay door or storage door locks and keys should be changed. Also they mention to even put a locking mechanism on you propane door.

I am all in favor of security, but I not sure is this a real problem out there, or are people making much about nothing?

A determined casual thief will probably do more damage to your rig opening the door with better locks on it. A smart thief will move on to easier targets. You are more likely to get the former than the latter. Simply locking the doors with OEM keys will prevent 99% of the opportunity, which is what such theft is... a crime of opportunity. Insurance will cover the rest. JMHO.

Locks are for the honest people staying honest. A criminal bent on getting in isn't really slowed down much by locks on anything. Peace of mind goes only as far as your perception of your rig security...which for almost any rig out there, can be defeated by a determined thief! All this notwithstanding...I haven't heard of reports of theft from storage bays/propane tank holders. It would be interesting to have more input from current RV owners on this unknown statistic.

Pretty sure it's illegal to lock doors to propane tanks.

No known law in California re: not locking propane tank doors. Most belt straps for tanks have the lock hasp capable of mounting a padlock on the hasp.

We have traveled thru out 44 States, since 2005. I have never locked anything, except, the Truck. I believe the cost of replacing the doors, etc. is much more expensive that what they steal. We do no boon docking, and use higher end RV parks. Have never had a issue. We have traveled with, and "Montana", and now "Brody". I would hope if there was a fire or what ever someone would save my Fur kid. We do have a gun safe. It would be easier to steal the 5th wheel that a weapon. Good Luck on your choice.

Happy Trails.

Thanks to all that replied, I really had no intention of changing locks for various reason, but I wanted to put it out there to see if I might be on the wrong side of this. We generally stay at higher end parks when we travel, and we have yet to go off grid, and doubt that we ever will as that is not our style. But having said that thanks again for your thoughts.

The hasp on the mounting strap still allows emergency personnel access.

30 years RVing and never had anything taken or have known anyone personally that did. Locking the compartment doors or changing the locks will do little good as you can break in with a 5.00 flat head screwdriver.

They need to be able to pull the tanks out quickly not just open the doors.

I lost the entire set of keys for my 2018 Montana 3791. I went to camping world and they replaced every key for me. The locks are not so unique. I did have to have the code for the entry door lock. It is found on the inside of the lock when you have it out of the door. Good thing I had door unlocked and not dead bolted. That would cause damage or get a crook or locksmith to pick it.

RVs were broken into years ago in the storage facility where I keep mine. They didn’t bother with keys. They got into my basement by prying the doors open. And no damage. There was a small black mark on the door where they used a screwdriver or such. And bent the lock tab a little. Bent it back with my thumb and still using it.

We were told that the dealer has a master key that will open basement doors. The DOT requires propane tanks to be accessible by emergency crews. The tanks can be locked as long as there is access to the shut valve and tank.

If i am not mistaken, all RV's ship with the 751 key. Most of you have keys for each others... I changed all mine (3) to another key, but like was mentioned,. in all reality a flat head screwdriver will open any of those bay door locks.
