Melted Dining Table

Hi All,
We are out in our new 2022 3121RL and had dinner. We put the dinner plates on the dinette table. The plates had hot food on them, but they were not heated. In fact we moved the plates to the table with no pot holders. They weren't that hot. And look what happened to our table. Anyone have similar issues?

Thanks,
Bob and Kathy

No, but we had a old table that had way to much wax on it that did something similar when the wife put a kinda hot plate on it.

Hard to tell from the picture, but is it melted? Or is it the fairly common heat discoloration of a finished wood surface?

My wife has made table runners as a preventative measure. Doesn’t help once they’re there, but preventing recurrence.

I haven’t seen that on a RV table before. Hopefully someone on here can suggest how to fix it, if there is a fix.

Our table looks like it has a thin wood veneer top - not a plastic laminate top.
DW has a "white ring" remover that we bought at a Ace or True Value hardware (see pic below). I think this has been around a long time because Debbie remembers her Mom using it when she was a kid. The included rag has some chemical treatment in it that will effectively "sand" or buff the white ring out. "Sand" is my word for it...but it works great. You have to put a lot of elbow grease into it. I have rubbed and rubbed on some real bad water rings for maybe 30 minutes - but the end result is great. You might try this stuff and see if you can get similar results. This little bag lives in a drawer in the living room and gets lots of use after Thanksgiving and Christmas family visitors go home.

That food must have been really hot! I've never seen anything like that before.

Read the link in my post above. It list multiple ways to try to eliminate those rings. And other methods can be found on the web also. And some of them do work. I have successfully removed those type rings our dining table and a side table in the living room.

Thanks All - the baking soda with toothpaste has definitely made it better. Looks like we are going to have to rub it out. There was a film on the table and now it is looking nicer than it did. Weird that it happened at all.

Nice to have folks to make suggestions - Thaks All!

We have actually seen this before on a dining room table at our daughters house. She was told to rub mayonnaise over the area affected and let it sit for 10 to 15 mins. Then clean off the table. It worked! Marks we’re gone. May be something cheap to try? Good luck.

Yes, same thing happened to our table, same circumstances as OP. Planned on resurfacing it but will try some of the suggestions on here. Thanks

You’re not alone!!

We did the same thing, though we had cloth placemats down, in our 2021 Montana. After much head scratching and cursing, we learned that they do not seal the table so the steam goes into the wood under the stain resulting in the white ring. We followed the instructions we got from several places to iron the spot out and it got a bit worse — DON’T TRY THAT!! Finally, a furniture refinisher said it was just going to be like that until you sand and restain and fully seal the table. Our solution was to purchase some high-heat resistant placements from Amazon that are black and leave them on all of the time. They match the table well, blend in, and prevent further damage. The placemats we use are “homing Faux Leather Heat Resistant Placemats in Charcoal (kind of a grey so they show less fingerprints and still look nice) from Amazon. We also have black and, as I said, they match very well.

Good luck! These tables should come with a warning for sure!!

melted dining table

One other item of note that I've discovered (the hard way) whether food comes (is heated) from the oven, stovetop, or the microwave, can cause that area of the plate where the food is sitting to become very hot, while the edges (where you hold it) can stay quite cool. Eventually the heat will migrate over the whole plate, but it takes a while.

We always use place mats but a plate that is not too hot t handle with bare hands should not cause that. You said it melted the table. Is the table plastic or wood? If it is wood it could be that the heat from the plates caused moisture to be drawn into the varnish. If that is the case, you might try placing an iron on medium medium heat on a couple layers of towel and ironing to dry the moisture. Another approach would be to use several applications of Old English to try to get oil back into the wood. Best of luck.

That’s a bummer. If you were close by I would give you ours. We have a 2021 3121RL legacy and I took our table out and installed this. I hope the pics came out ok and you can see them. Very easy project.

I did the same with ours and still have the original table, but Ft. Meyers is a long way from NY.

We’ve had that happen with “not hot” plates. They do fade away after time. Not sure why it happened or why pretty much went away but we use heavy placemats, and flat pot holders any slightly hot plates.
