Opinion? Keep G614 w/21k miles or new Marathons
We are trading our 2009 3400 for a 2012 3625. Our current tires are Goodyear G614 which are about 1 1/2 years old and 21000 miles. The new 3625 has the Goodyear Marathons with about 1100 miles (Indiana to Texas).
What do you think: keep our G614s or go with the new Marathons. The G614 treads are good covering most of Lincoln's head on a penny.
The original Marathons had tread separation at about 12000 miles and I put on the G614s.
Are the current Marathons better than the 2009 Marathons?
How many miles do people expect G614s to last?

I think I would keep the 614s also. Got about 20K on our 614s and they still look good. Think I would trust a used 614 before I would trust a new Marathon. Plus you have no idea how those Marathons were treated in that 1100 mile trip. Just my opinion.

Keep the G614s get rid of the China bombs. They are called China bombs for a reason. If they are over 4 or 5 years you might think about replacing the G614s. Lonnie can help with that. No matter what I say go with what he says. You cant beat a man at his own trade.

Deep six the Marathons as fast as you can. They're junk.

I understood that the new 2012's from the 3400 up came with the G14s. If that is true, what happened to them?

I'd keep the Marathons ... they're questionable trailer tires but they'll make great tire swings for the grandkids.

Even with 21K miles, I would keep the G614's.

If new marathons were any better than the old ones Goodyear wouldn't have been willing to trade my used Marathons for 5 new G614's mounted and balance for only $800 in just 5 months ago. They know those tires don't belong on rigs this heavy and they didn't even argue with me. If they had believed differently they wouldn't have done that deal with me.

Dick, did you make the deal with Goodyear through a dealer? Also, what did you do for new wheels to handle the higher psi?

I would go with the "GOODYEAR G670 RV": X4 capacity = 18,160 lbs.
The G670 is also available in an H rated tire.
245/70R19.5 G BL 13.5 6.75, 7.50 7.50 9.7 33.0 4540@110
4 Marathons Which are E rated are good for 13,680 lbs. .. far short of your trailer's 15K+ GVWR
4 G614s are rated for 15,000 lbs. which is a little shy of the GVWR of your trailer which is ~15,800 lbs.
We get stuck on this emotional "china bomb" band wagon and do not look at the weight rating of the tires vs the GVWR and/or actual loaded weight of our trailers. Snoop around on the 'interwebs' a bit, and you will see that G614s also fail.

I still don't get all the weight ratings, but isn't this actually within weight rating if you take the pin weight off of the 15k GVWR because not all the 15k is on the axles?

The bottom line is they are garbage. I was within weight limits when one literally exploded and another one was ready to.

My 2010 came with marathons. Driving up to South Dakota to renew drivers license, all four tires starting losing chucks of tread. By the time I got to Sioux Falls, they were garbage. First and last time for a trailer tire for me. On the drive back from SD, with new LT tires, absolutely no wear, so was a tire issue, not an axle or weight issue. Not air pressure either, I keep close watch on that.

Knowing the Marathons are not good tires, is this true that they would be within weight specifications taking into account subtracting the pin weight? How much is it costing you guys for these G614 tires and the new wheels they require? Thanks.

Dont know the cost of those tires, but just repacked the wheel bearings, and while the wheels were off, noticed PSI Specs were stamped on the inside of each rim, mine reflected 110PSI which is good for a G load tire.
