Contact Kevin Skellenger "BethandKevin". They live up that way and will give you a list too long to do in 5 years. But what they have to say is spot on. Took their recommendations last year and had a wonderful time. One thing we found unusual. If you go to the Shipwreck Museum to see, amongst a lot of cool things, the bell from the Edmond Fitzgerald. Try the fudge in the gift shop. Believe it or not the best fudge in the UP and we tried to try all of them. Have a great trip!

George, We really enjoyed Copper Harbor on the Keweenaw Peninsula. If you like waterfalls the UP has tons of them. Tahquamenon Falls is one of our favorites. The Tiki Village in St. Ignace was a very reasonable and adequate campground at $21 a night full hook ups if you have passport america. Jim

Go to Sault Ste Marie (Soo Saint Marie) and see the Soo Locks. A great campground there is the Aune Osborn Campground which is owned by the city. It's right on the water and you can watch the ships pass-by heading to and from the Locks. We stayed there for a week. Here is their web site http://www.sault-sainte-marie.mi.us/aunecamp.htm

Also recommend you stop at Mackinaw Bridge and take the ferry out to Mackinaw Island. Very beautiful place and worth spending the whole day there.

There is a lot to see in the UP of Michigan. Enjoy!!

A couple years ago we did the circle around Lake Michigan, spending some time in the U.P. X2 what Scott said about seeing Mackinaw Island. The horse drawn wagon tour is a must! None of the CG's stand out as special except the one in Mackinaw City was really nice and the Muskegon State Park in Muskegon was also really nice.

Pictured Rocks, area, lots of water falls all around that area, many can be hiked.

Tahquamenon Falls great. Newberry and the bears coming to the dump.

Mackinaw area nice, after not being real happy with campground south of the bridge, we found Tiki last year, in St. Ignace. We won't stay south of the bridge again.

Seney National Wildlife area.

Keweenaw Penisula, good stuff.

Big Spring area and Island State Park. Big Spring is really cool!!!

Wikipedia list of Michigan State Parks.

Fun list of things to do in the UP.

Remember it will start closing up early. Not sure how long any of the parks are open, but, any time after October 1st might start getting spicy, as in hard to find a park open.

Have fun!

Michelmackinac State Park! Right below the bridge on the west side.

They are unearthing old "fort" building foundations and have rebuilt what was formerly there in some place. They tell about the tearing down of the fort to move to the island and why. Then how they tore down on the island and came back!!!

They had muskets and quite the little show about the weapons used and you can walk around the former Fort!

Fascinating!!! And ditto to all the rest above ^^^^^...up there!!!!

If you are a member of the Elks, they have a few perfect sites to view the ships in Sault Ste Marie.

grand marais is nice and quiet and right on the lake.

marquette has a city park which is nice. and on the western edge there is Menominee and they have a real nice park on the wisconsin border which is on the river.

and of course in the up you have to have a couple of pasties.

enjoy the fall.

We just returned from a short U.P. visit. Chamber of Commerce runs a very nice RV park on the edge of Iron River. There is a nice paved hiking trail from there to an old iron mine museum. We chose to walk to the museum and about halfway there we were joined by a local celebrity, Miss Iron County!! I'm feeling pretty priveliged now! She was very pleasant and shared a wealth of info on the local area. We walked back the same 2 miles in a light rain, but it was a fun day regardless. Then on up to Copper Harbor. It's absolutely beautiful country.

Jaybird let me know if you find a campground that you can back up to Lake Superior and look out your back window or pull along it where your awning is facing the lake! I think that would be my ideal camping spot and probably never leave if I find it! LOL
