Shoe storage
We have been unhappy with our shoes in the doorway. Under our steps are vents for the air return. On the bottom step we removed the vent and moved it to the back of the step. Now we have a place for our shoes. They are tucked away, but yet easy to reach. And, there is is no disruption of the air circulation.

Now that is a clever idea. Thanks for sharing.

This is a great idea. Others have done this too and in your case I see you have two steps with venting. That's very nice. But what about DW's shoes? Where does she keep hers? :-)

How funny. Those slides are mine (the DW). We're tall, so I guess we have a right to have big feet. LOL

Just as long as those tennis shoes are not smelly... Remember that air is recycled back into the coach (mostly) when the furnace kicks on...

You got me! Sorry footloose I couldn't tell who created the post; DH or DW. In retrospect, the shoes don't even look like they protrude too far beyond the step so they didn't look that big.... I took a (wrong) guess. Nice job anyways.
Have fun in the MOC.

No problem whatsoever! Actually the picture isn't completely accurate -- the shoes fit all the way under and don't stick out at all. If they did, I would be worried about tripping on them.

Great Idea!
Just make certain you haven’t stepped in anything un-pleasant to the smelling before placing them there near the return vent. Hee Hee

Looks good but hubby only wears Cowboy boots, has since age 12. We met 21 years ago. He had a pair of sneakers that came along with him. He just threw them out in the Spring and got new ones. I suppose the old ones were dry rotted.
Speaking of shoe storage, has anyone installed a show vertical/wall shoe rack inside the closet?

That looks like such a great idea. I think I will go right out and do that on ours too. I did install shelves in our "laundry room" (no w/d) to keep our shoes on but I like your idea!

My shoe storage solution for stairs that are NOT vented
Just popped the staples out from the top board (through the carpet), installed a piano hinge, and a latch, good to go...

That is a GREAT solution. We seem to wear two pairs of shoes all the time (slides and sneakers each). We store the other 2 pairs on the closet floor. We've beem considering pushing the vent back on the top step as well, but haven't decided if we would like how it looks. So far the closet floor works for the ones we're not using that day. DH is waiting to do lots more projects when he has access to proper tools again. We'll be visiting friends in October with a full shop.

Great idea, both of you. Since we're doing a "show and tell" of added shoe storage and ours happens to be similar to Footloose's, here's ours. We have just the one stair vent.

Just goes to show, "there's more than one way to skin a cat." Very nice.

I would just be careful about blocking too much air flow there... The main reason that I was told by Aram for going to a two vent system from a one vent system, was that the engineers decided that one fully operational vent "just barely met" the airflow requirements for the furnace. Too close for comfort, so Keystone set about increasing the grill area.
I hate it when I'm a kill-joy.

Dave: Wait a minute here. You mean that Keystone can figure out cold air return volume and take steps to correct it BUT don't have a clue about the POS tires they use?

The vented one is also a great way to dry your wet shoes after coming in out of a cold rain or snow.

Fixing cold air returns is apparently easier than finding reliable USA tire mfrs...
