Trailer Hitch in the Rear

Our rig, 3811MS, came with a trailer hitch in the rear.

Anyone found out the Ratings for this hitch?

I have read on this forum that it is rated for 300 Lbs.

Probably depends if you have real 2" Receiver or the make believe toy 1 1/4" one.

My "factory" hitch had a sticker on it showing the max load. It was the small hitch and it said max load 250 lbs.

It's not just the "load" it's the bouncing and rocking caused by whatever you put on the hitch. That is what causes the damage.

Just an idea...we have recently purchased a 2” hitch clamp that stops the movement/play/shaking of what you put into the receiver.
We have installed it but we did not used it yet. Seems really secure. Check it out for yourself...hope this helps!

It’s the trailer frame that’s the problem. It’s built just strong enough to support the trailer body with the trailer body’s help.

That hitch is good for a bicycle rack or maybe one of those swing down storage racks to carry a BBQ, etc, but the max weight is about 300 lbs, STATIC. Load it up to 300 lbs and drive west on I-40 thru Arizona at 65 mph and you'll probably rip it from its moorings.

My 2011 Monty came with a 1.25" x 1.25" receiver on the back. When I removed it to have it modified to a 2" x 2" receiver, I found a tag out of sight on top of the receiver that said Max 150 lbs. The new 2" x 2" receiver and associated hardware is much more robust that the original but th weak point in the entire design are where the receiver assembly bolts to the Monty frame. Keystone tack welded a flimsy "C" channel to the bottom of the I-beam on each side. I now have a 2" x 2" receiver for my bike rack but I would never use the receiver for anything else. And remember, 40 lbs of dead weight becomes a lot more from the inertia when bouncing down the road.

We were considering a swivel wheel trailer to carry out trike. It mounts with a double hitch. Not sure how much would be tongue weight.

I have a 2" adapter id like to put on the rear bumper of mine for a bike rack. I looked at the bumper of my unit, where it welds to the frame, and it is fully welded to the frame, not tack welded. I have been told that since it is welded properly, that it will be fine, but I have yet to try it. Any experience? I have a 2016 3950 BR, first year they made them, I believe that they now have a factory receiver in the back for a bike rack, but mine does not, it is a bumper.

I am planning on taking mine to a hitch shop to have it beefed up so I can haul my side by side.

The 300 pound rating is a waste. I did haul a electric scooter with no issue on a rack.

I figure if the iron is there, it should be useful..

I think the real issue is the distance from the tires to the rear bumper is so long you basically have a diving board as you go down the road. What ever is on that hitch needs to be very securely lashed down.

Saw a rear bumper yesterday that impressed me.
The guy removed the lightweight square bumper, and welded a real , solid, piece of square pipe back on.
The 2" receiver hitch, and plug, were welded to it.
No way his sxs was gonna ever have any effect to that set up.
I'd say that bumper could withstand a direct rear ending, and come out uneffected.

i saw a couple of hitches on etrailer and one of them was 71" and made to fit inside of the I-beam frame and it drops down from there. You remove the factory 1-1/4 hitch and install. Here in northern Minnesota I see tons of 5-er's pulling boats so there is a way to do it.

Everybody was having such a good time and then someone had to go and spoil everything

I did replace my 1.25x1.25 hitch with a 2". Was a bolt-in process and is really strong without any flex. p.s. I'm long out of warranty.

Hey Raven,
I know its been a while since you posted this in 2019 but I'm wondering if you did it. I also have a swivel wheel trailer as I want to bring our HD Ultra and I'm looking for info as to whether it worked out or not. Any photos you could share?

Is it the 2 inch are the smaller one
