Surge Protectors

Good day
Will a 50 amp Surge Protector provide adequate surge protection when hooked up to a 30 amp service? I know it can be hooked up with a reducer/ 50 amp to 30 amp dog bone to shore power but does it still proved the required protection?
Thanks for any help you can provide.

Yes. It will actually provide better protection because the Joules rating, which is the rating of how large a surge a device is capable of handling, is higher in a 50 amp device than in a 30 amp device. Do you already have a surge protector or are you looking to purchase one? And, are you talking about just a surge protector or a better device called an EMS, which will protect against much more than just surges?

You definately want a 50 amp EMS. You do need the additional protection it affords and will work well with 50 or 30amps coming in.

Thanks for following up! I haven't bought one yet and looking to purchase one. But now that you mentioned the EMS and I looked into those I think that is the way to go. Thanks again.

Progressive Industries 50 amp surge protector is the way to go. I have had no issues with mine.

We just installed a Progressive Industries EMS-HW50C. We'll see how it works in a few weeks.
