I am looking at a diesel gen with aux fuel tank that will fit behind the hitch. Diesels run quieter & are very efficient plus having extra fuel for the truck is always a bonus.

The diesel gen in the front compartment..? With the gas line to the back of the truck?

Sorry, I meant behind the hitch in the truck bed, I want to mount semi permanently with an aux fuel tank. Unfortunately the generator I wanted has been discontinued, the durostar ds7000q, it was the right size & amperage. Now I,m looking at the kubota lowboyII GL7000, it's a little pricey but I like having an extra fuel tank for both the truck & generator. Whats nice is it's super quiet & liquid cooled, can be installed in a truck bed with its enclosure.

I happened to see this as I was looking for a lp genset. Do you think this would fit..? And connect up to the in command ? I asked the seller if it has a 8 pin connector. Just planning.. this is actually close to me and the price is good. 307 hours.

We owned three RV's in the past with generators. I could not imagine owning a 5th wheeler without one. Precooling the unit is one important function. Stopping while traveling and using the coffee pot, microwave, etc.
Buy once, cry once.

I think I’m going to get it...always concerned when buying used.

Update so the genset I was looking at doesn’t run so that’s a hard no. We’re going to order the 6500 new. If I look at trekwood I see there’s a prep stand...
So when I cut out the floor do I install this stand and then mount the genset to the stand.? Right now I just have the steel floor no prep.

Are there any real world advantages of the 6500 vs the 5500?

Check to see if you have some cutout already in the front area. Not sure about units shipped without a Gen Prep option, but generally those with the option have some pre-notched sections to remove to generator installation.
I've had to units with Factory installed gennys and they just set on the floor with several of those panels removed for cooling air flow and exhaust.

Yes the cut out is already there I would order everything from trekwood and order the genset. The generator doesn’t just sit in that opening without something holding it to the floor right..? I’m assuming the stand from the post above is what would go into the cut out area after the floor is removed.

Just more left over watts to run other appliances with 2 ac’s running.

That is correct. Remove the cutout, install the shroud, install the stand then mount the gen to the stand.

Do you know if the 6500 will fit ..? I’ve seen the 5500 but for 1300 more might as well get the bigger one as long as it fits !

If it gets to be an issue, as much as I would hate to do it, maybe let a good dealer wire it up for you.
I live in Texas, and to be able to step into a cool rig at the end of the day of traveling would be worth the propane burn to me. I don’t boondock, and its state parks or RV park for me, so a small gas gen as a back up is where I'm at. If you are going to go full time and boondocking, I’m with you on the 6.5k Onan. If you travel in the south, you will be glad you have it. Perhaps you can cut some gas usage by just running the main AC while traveling? Good luck!

Well I guess you can say we’re keeping the unit for a while. I found the wiring harness so all I would need to do is plug in the 8 pin connector run the wires to the iN·command system and attach via color code.

Ok so next week I’m going to order what I need. If I’m missing something please let me know.

Onan 6.5 lp
From trekwood:
The stand
The firebox
Wiring harness

I need to go to Lowe’s for the propane line T and flexible line to the generator. Recommendation for flexible gas line...
Possible battery connections
The exhaust is built in, but I’ll be (my neighbor) will be custom welding the exhaust to exit out the drivers side of the coach.

Am I missing anything..?

Tony
