First Trip Towing the Monty with new TV

Just got back from my first trip towing the 5ver with my new TV. Just under 1000 miles towing I averaged 10.5mpg. With just about 3000 miles on the TV I am pretty pleased. I set my cruise on 70 in Tow/Haul mode and she pulled like a dream. Should get better the more miles I get on it.

Not to be an alarmist, but if you are equipped with ST tires (Goodyear Marathons or Missions), you should observe that they are only rated for 65 mph at 80 psi. There are documented failure issues with many ST tires, and one factor could be speed. Food for thought. (We usually run at about 63-65 mph, but have gained speed on down-hill sections before corrections are made).

I've read between the lines on a few of the tire post and get the idea that a few of our members are over driving their tires.

I get about 11 mpg with hills where I can't use the cruise control much and work on staying below 65mph. If I drive flatlands and with the cruise I get as high as 13. I am happy with that. With a 38 gallon fuel tank I can easily go 300 miles between fuel stops. I don't like to get near empty.

Check your tires. Like Bingo states, if you have STs then don't exceed 65MPH or you might have a problem. I have them and don't go over 65 even on downhills, but around where I tow I get a lot of practice on hill driving to use the tricks for staying below 65. I have seen other rigs blow by me with their brake lights engaged (that's scary to watch). At almost 60,000 miles on my '06 6.0 PSD, I am proud to say I still have quite a bit of original brake pads left.

Your 6.7 should do better over time and each higher mph you go will lower your mpgs because of that sail and weight you are towing. Monitor the RPMs. My sweet spot is about 62-63 mph because the RPMs are about 1800. On hilly roads the RPMs are around 2200 to 2500 hence the decrease in mpgs. I can't help that because more RPMs seem to help control the rig speed.

Congratulations on your maiden voyage! That was a great test you put it through. I like your signature picture but I'm thinking you can improve your MPGs if you raise the landing gear when you are towing... DOH! LOL!

Glad to hear all went well on your first trip out with your new TV...but would also caution you to observe the speed ratings on your STs.

Been towing this thing the same way for about 2 years now . Maybe I've just been lucky. But from what I've read and heard on those tire failures, seems to me like it doesn't matter what speed you travel. If they are bad they're gonna fail no matter what speed you are traveling. My tires may be the exception to the rule, but I have not had one problem with them. They probably have over 10,000 miles on them so it is probably getting time to start looking at replacing them. The main reason I stated my speed is because I know the slower you go the better MPG's you're going to get. It's just that I was pleased with 10.5mpg at 70 mph. Didn't mean to get into this tire thing again. By the way, that 10.5 is with the landing gear up. LOL

Be wary of those Missions. Mine lasted about 12k and I decided that was enough. When I was having them changed out (for LTs) the service manager came out and said I had one tire that was shedding it's bands and would have blown very soon.

Some times it helps to be lucky!

Hello and nice truck! I'm thinking about selling my 06 F350 SRW for a 2011 dually with the new diesel. However, while I know that your engine is brand new and not even close to being broken in, and your mpg will only go up, I'm getting 10.8 with my 06 over hilly terrain and will run close to 12 mpg on flat land, all around 70mph. I'm surprised that your mpg is that low since Ford has raved about this engine. I'm towing a 2010 3750 FL and loaded is about 14k. I'm hoping your mileage improves significantly over time and look forward to your updates. Nice rig, nice truck!

They are a nice all around truck but we are waiting to see how the 6.7 will turn out over time. We are getting better then 10.5 average in fuel mileage with our 6.4 with a dually and tuned with an extra 210 horse pulling our Monty 3400RL. I know there will be programs to get better efficiency out of that 6.7. Thanks for the update on your new purchase.

Beautiful truck Mark.I think you have the nicest truck ever built.
8e3k0 as you know I am using the same 210 tune you are. What speed do you like to pull at to get 10.5 MPG? I haven't checked my mileage since tuned mine, but it sure does pull better. WOW what a difference.

Thanks everyone. My truck has the 3:55 rear-end. Also, on that 10.5mpg's, about the last 250 to 300 miles was driving staight into about a 20+mph wind. It's still better than that 8mpg's I was getting with my 2010 6.4. I have never been one to buy anything(vehicle)the first year of a major change, but I did my homework on this 6.7 and Ford tested these things extensively before putting them on the market. They would run them full throttle til everything was glowing red hot then drop the temp about 140 degrees, instantly. Pour ice water on them is what I heard. If anything failed, they started all over. I love the truck so far and it has all the power in the world, and yes, I am hoping the mieage just gets better. Thanks for all the compliments on my truck. By the way, Ford knows what these trucks are used for and they think of everything when putting accessories on them, from power extending mirrors to the back up sensors not coming on when you have a trailer hooked up. Pretty awesome truck.

The 2011 Ford SHOULD get better MPG than the 6.4 what with the better choice if rear diff and the 6 speed xmittion. However I have little faith in Ford marketing and the MPG claims. They did the same thing with the 6.4L. The few encounters we have had with folks towing like weights with the 6.7 L show no better mpg than we are doing with the 08 6.4L..thus far. I would expect that the 6.7 should get 1 ot 2 mpg better towing in real life but that is not what Ford is marketing.

BTW..We never got 8's towing this 3400. We can always count on 10/10.5 at the end of the day no matter what.

As you probably know your engine is not a nickle cast iron engine, like all other pickup. It is made of compacted graphite iron. The CHI is much better than cast iron. I'm in the machine shop business and have a friend who sell cutting tools to the automotive industry. He told me about these CHI several years ago. He told me and let me read about how much stronger and how much more wear resistant it was than cast iron. At that time it was way too expensive to machine for a normal engine. With the advancements in cutting tools and machine tools that will bore a cylinder check its own work and change cutting tools and rebore when necessary, and all on its own. It is now possible to make a block from from this material. This is one reason why I think you may have the best engine ever put in a pickup truck.

Mark, I have to say that mileage you are getting had me little concerned but with the 3:55 rear end it makes a little more sence. Mine has the 3:31 and Iam hoping for a little better than 10.5, I'll find out next week on our trip to the Ozarks whick will be our first pull. Our 6.4 was 9.5 to 10.5 most of time it was under 10.

Bill, I'm anxious to hear the numbers when you make that trip. I'm really thinking mine will only get better.

Lynwood, I do believe Ford got it right this time. The truck and engine are pretty impressive. Thanks.

I have just traded trucks and gave our 2003 GMC Duramax 2500 HD to our son.

We have a new 2011 GMC Durmax 3500 HD, but haven't towed with it yet.

As a point of interest we also have a 2955RL, a 2007. This summer we towed
it all the way from west coast to east coat and back with our 2003, and most fill
gave us 15 to 16 miles to the gallon, that is the Canadian gallon. I might add
that ALL of that towing was at precisely 55 mph. If you drive and tow in California
you had best stay at 55 mph, it is the law.

We are heading south on the 15th of November and it will be our first tow with
the new Duramax, and looking forward to seeing what the mileage will be.

We have had 24.8 mpg empty.

I'm surprised your mileage was that low. I get that with my new 2010 Dodge Cummins purchased in May. I was under the assumption the new 6.7 Ford with the Urea was suppose to get better mileage. Fuel cost really start adding up if your having to fill the urea tank faster due to the MPG's you stated in your post.

The question in my mind is ... does Ford use that as a selling point (better mpg's than competition)? It might come back to bite them in the rear down the line.
