Dexter EZ lube wheel bearings

I recognize that some folks have the talent and time to take care of their own rigs however their are also some of us that left all that behind in the mists of our youth. I was just offering up an alternative as I had just made inquiries at the my local RV repair shop.

I've done several improvements that i wouldn't let my dealer touch. With the 125.00 or more per hour they charge plus weeks setting out in the weather just to get started and then a 50/50 chance of them doing it right i prefer doing it myself. Some of my major improvements such as MCD shades, disc brakes, and I.S. i let the professionals do but i don't consider dealers professionals. I'm retired and have the time so i try to do the things i know how to do including maintenance such as replacing brakes and packing wheel bearings.Even though i'm limited to what i can do compared to many on this forum, i consider many of the rv techs at dealers mechanically challenged.

When repacking your wheel bearings do you use the Lippert Self Leveling hydraulic system to lift the tires off the ground?

I do, with jack stands as a safety.

I have had the rig fully off the ground, supported by the hydraulic jacks, for as long a three days when I had the initial problem with greased brakes, as it took that much time to get the drums turned after finding a shop to do it. There are not too many shops that can turn these electric drums, as most are not set up to turn the armature surface that contacts the magnet. Our drums needed turning, because the grease caused a very strange wear to the brake and armature surfaces.

Yes, the hydraulic jacks are just as strong as any other jack i might use.I use the jacks for any time i raise the rv whether brakes or changing tires.I feel very confident with these jacks.Just remember anytime you obligate your body to use jack stands. I would never work under the rig without jackstands if i had my tires off.

Unfortunately (for me) our HC does not have self leveling.

But

I believe that you do need to be cautious with raising and leaving for any length of time to do wheels off work on any towed RV if it has a hydraulic leveling system. These can leak down and not necessarily show any fluid dripping as it can be internal to pump seals and fluid control solenoids.

If the system is electric, there is little chance that they will fail as the jacks are adaptations of the front landing gear of a conventional 5er,

IF you were rotating your wheel, grease should have been coming back out around where you were pumping it in. If you weren't rotating your wheel, you may have blown a seal.

On the other hand, there's been reports of not enough grease in brand new hubs. First time I greased ours I used up about 3/4 of a tube to get clean grease coming back out. Now I only use about 1/4 to 1/2 a tube.

I completely agree. I only used ez lube once and grease my brake shoes great. I am in process of ordering new brakes. I will always repack bearings old fashion way from now on. That way I know what I have and where the grease is.

Regarding the EZ lube system. I spoke to Dexter today about this very topic. The rep informed me that using the system is fine, but his personal recommendation is to remove the wheels and check them every 12,000 miles. So basically, you can use it, but to feel comfortable and to really inspect the bearings, etc, remove and visualize the parts. If a bearing looks to be wearing, just replace.

Yes. If the seal is breached by grease, it could contaminate the pads

But you will be able to SEE the seal and if any grease has slipped past.

I grease mine with a pneumatic gun at 60psi with a couple of pulses at a time while turning the wheel and have no problems.
