Putting something down that drain can cause damage. The drain uses a Hepvo valve and not a P trap (google it and you'll see what it looks like) It's usually in the ceiling of the basement just under the shower. Take it off, and if you haven't punctured the membrane, clean it with a soft brush. If, like me, you punctured the membrane then you need to replace it, not a bad job and you can get a replacement from Amazon or most RV places. Once you have it fixed, remove the chrome cover from the shower drain and replace it with one of the screens that are available most places. Once the screen is in place you'll have to clean it often but you won't have the drain problem again..

I use a small, 1" bottle brush that I can run through the plastic fitting above the Hepvo valve to clean the membrane, and it doesn't cause any damage but gets the crud out so the membrane will close properly. They also have a Hepvo valve under the sink in the bedroom, and that one I have to remove to clean, but I still use the bottle brush on that one too.
