new rig no brakes!!!!

Hi All,
I have never towed this trailer because the dealership dropped the rig off at the house. So today I was going to take the trailer down the highway for about 20 miles to check out how everything is. Well I am all hooked up. I have trailer lights, turn and brake lights even back up lights, but no brakes. I have the trucks set to Hydraulics over electric heavy. Tried all setting and tried all the load setting up to 10, but still no brakes. I also moved the pig tail from the bed outlet to the bumper outlet still no brakes.....Any clues???

I cannot imagine the dealer dropping it off without knowing the brakes were not working that is not something you cant miss and would be a huge liability. You need to check the electrical output of your brake pin on the truck 7 pin. That is where I would start and easy to do. If that is ok then call the dealer to get their ass out there to fix it. Note: every RV should have a 12V tester in your tool box...

Do you have hydraulic brakes i.e. Disc Brakes on the trailer?
What model/vintage is your trailer?
What model vintage is your Truck?

You should only use "hydraulic over electric" if your Montana has disk brakes. If your Montana does not have disc brakes, you should be set on "electric" mode.

Trailer is a 2020 Montana 3931FB Took delivery on it last Thursday. Unit was delivered to our front door because of the bug going around. Have the Legecy package with disk brakes.

The pickup is a Dodge Ram 2017 3500 4X4 6.7 Cummings with 9 speed trans.

got it working...

I replaced the pig tail on the trailer with a new pig tail I had at home. Works great now. I will call the dealer and let them know what I had to do and have then sent me a replacement cable. Thanks for all your help. Never had that happen before. They might have slammed the tailgate on the pigtail cable. You never know do you!

Just a thought for future reference...You can always pull the break away cable to check that the trailer brakes are being actuated as well. Simple test.

I took my trailer from storage to home to the dealer. On the way to the dealer I had no brakes. Dealer checked and said all is good. Went to Chevy dealer and they said all is ok (after $100). Then, I think it was on here) someone reminded me about the connector having corrosion on it.

About 12 years ago I had figured this out because about half the time, when I would start the day I would get a message 'Trailer not connected'. I would just unplug and plug it back in and it worked. So after that I plugged in, unplugged, and repeated about 2 more times every morning. All messages went away.

Sooo, I went to pick up trailer and did this and brakes worked. I was in a hurry the first trip and forgot. So maybe remember to do this daily to clean off the connections.

Usually before a trip I will spray both the plug and receptacle with WD40 and slide the plug in and out several times to clean out any crud that may have accumulated.

Sitting in your driveway, and if your truck has an integrated brake system (Fords do for sure, Dodge/Ram??) and you have the standard electric brakes, not discs, you will not have any brakes applied unless you pull the safety pin. Electric over electric dash setting

If you have disc brakes (Electric over hydraulic dash setting) the hydraulic actuator/pumpmay not (probably not)come on unless you pull that emergency pin

If you operate the manual lever on the brake control, the brakes will work either electric or hydraulic

The purpose of that OE integrated system is to be speed dependent. The higher end Prodigy (Tecumseh) brake system is supposed to operate the same way.

If after doing these as tests and you still don't have brakes, time to start measuring current after checking wiring. The first place to look is in that box mounted on the hitch box. Next at the axles On ours, a wire nut came loose in the middle of nowhere Arizona on a long mountain downgrade which made for an intersting few miles

Not sure on the brake issue but you should be really happy with the disk brake setup and your exhaust brake but I am curious about your 9 speed transmission. I suspect it might have been a typo as I thought the Dodge with the Cummins only had six speed transmissions.
Happy roads to you.

No typo, it is a 9 speed (4 over 5 split er (Eaton/Fuller Roadranger) I put it in myself, this does not come with the truck off the lot. Work like a champ.
