Campground near Smokey Mtns.

We will be in the Smokey Mountains in Oct. this year. Any recommendations on campgrounds/RV parks that would be convenient to the park??????

It's been a few years but we really liked Twin Creeks CG at Gatlinburg. Three miles to the entrance to the park and a much quieter town and much less congested than Pigeon Forge. But only a short drive to PF if you want to go there.

We quite frequently use Eagles Nest in Pigeon Forge, happens to be a Passport America park also. However, i just saw you are going in Oct, PA is not available in Oct, leaves changing then. Still, a good park.

If you plan to go in Oct. make res. now. Try Pride Resort in Waynesville, NC. Beautiful spot with mountain stream running through. Also Coast to Coast park. convenient to all of the above mentioned + Cherokee, Maggie Valley, Cataloochie Valley where the NC Elk herd is. They will be in rut in Oct. Bugeling loudly. Biltmore House, The GSM Nat. park, the Blue Ridge Parkway. We might see you there, was wonderful last year. Be sure to eat at Granny's Kitchen in Maggie Valley.

Pine Mountain in Pigeon Forge. very nice , centrally located. This park is run by Mainstay Hotel chain. Also if you use this park you can use all the facilities at the hotel across the street.
Pool, large hot tub and gym. Site by the creek are the best.

We stayed at Twin Creek in June. It’s a really nice campground. I don’t think you would be disappointed if you stayed there.

I will echo two earlier posts, Twin Creek is a nice park. Book now and if they are available, get the sites along the creek. The shuttle stop is at the park and the main turn around is a block from the park entrance. There is no need to drive into Gatlinburg, the shuttle works well. The SMP is a short drive through Gatlinburg. The drive is a little faster if you take the road around the downtown main drag.

We stayed in Walton's Creek in Pegion Forge. On the trolley, river and Passport America.
Hint. Try not to arrive on Friday or leave on Sunday.

I probably should mention what drew us to Gatlinburg is its being about as central to all the parts of the national park as you can get without actually staying in the national park. We tried Pigeon Forge but didn't like the constant heavy traffic and noise. That's just us. We prefer quiet and laid back. For those who like the activities in Pigeon Forge, it's a good place to be.

And I will say that national park is far more beautiful and enjoyable than I ever dreamed it would be. We originally planned to be there for a month but we extended to seven weeks.
