Tires Age

I have a 2019 3790 RD bought new in 2020. The Sailun tires only have about 2000 miles and have been in the same spot for four years with tire covers. I think I read on here that four years in the max. So, would you get a new set or not? If so, favorite quality brands. I'm currently in Dallas, going to East Tennessee in April. I think I know what 90% are going to say. I just want to hear what others think.

Replace with Sailun. Cheap insurance.

Goodyear says 5 years and after that they won’t fix a flat. So I’d say 5 years and you should be safe of course depending on the tires you have. Not all tires are created equal.

My China Bomb Ranier blew out at highway speed (2000 miles) and did $3000 damage. I paid $3000 out of pocket instead of insurance (first estimate was less than $2000). Ranier did pay for the two damaged tires, no questions other than a photo and explanation, so there was that. My impression from the phone call was that they were not in the least surprised.

Bought five new Goodyear Endurance tires. Outstanding purchase, but fairly pricy. Pay once, cry once.

I’ll never look at a China Bomb again.

My blowout a few years ago happened on 5 year old tires. After changing a tire on the side of the highway, I vowed to never run 5 year old tires again. I replaced my Sailuns last Spring when they were 4 years old. Like others said, cheap insurance against a possible blowout.

My Sailuns have a 6 year warranty "against defects", but I replace at 5 years regardless of miles. If yours are 4 years and there's no cracking or problems, they are likely good enough to get you to a tire store.

Surprisingly I've gotten 15000 miles on my Rainiers. Running at 110 PSI. Even tread wear and run cool according to the TPS. They'll hit 3 years in February. I need to check the date code on them.

Ok, if you have a 2019, your tires are already 5 years old. The DOT circle will tell you the week and the year of manufacture. My 2022 has tires built in August of 2021, but my camper was built in Feb of 2022. That DOT data information is the key to your tires precise age. And all 5 tires may not match

Ours have similar age but 45,000 miles on my sailuns. Tire mfr date 32 week of 2019. we replaced ours with new sailuns last fall, Just beginning to show some wear signs but tires do age out and we have scheduled this item to replace every 4-5 years or 50K miles whichever comes first for peace of mind. NO regrets and no failures so far. Great tires. Upgraded to 235/85 tires from 235/80 for higher margin of load carrying capacity. Tires slightly taller is only downside.

What does Sailun say? Different manufacturers have different requirements.

I ran Michelin XPS Ribs on my relatively light 3075RL. Michelin said inspect yearly and replace after 10 years. I ran the first set 8 years before replacing and they still looked new. Never even a low tire. Added 3-4 psi at the beginning of each season and I was good.

Tire Cost

Just replaced my Salun tires. Cost per tire was $165 and tire marking says made in Cambodia. Cheap insurance at the 5 year mark. With balance, mounting and tax the cost was around $800+.

I have always used Michelin tires. 20 years now. I don't know if I had RIBS or Defender tires, but rated at 3040 lb. I weighed and one tire was right at 2980lb or so and the others 2500-2800. I drive 65 which is well within specs. 2023 summer I blew one on the right side and one on the left side. They looked great, but I try to change at 4-5 years, but couldn't find my receipt so assumed I lost it. Well they were a year old when the warehouse got them and sat there for 6 months. So the tires were 6 1/2 years old. All I can figure is it was probably around 105 degrees on one tire and 95 when the other blew, so maybe the age AND the temp did me in.

Check the side-walls of your current tires. If you see any cracks then the tires are beginning to dry rot (or already are). Definitely replace them. If you see no side-wall cracks then the tires are still if good shape. If no cracks at the moment and if the trailer has been sitting stationary all this time, then take the the trailer out and run it a few miles to exercise the tires. THEN if the cracks appear, yep.... change them for sure!

Michelin has a terrible reputation with 22" tires. Cracking is a serious problem, the favorite MH tire is Toyo.
