Warning pay attention to the smell.

A couple of nights ago my wife and I woke up to a terrible smell in the camper. We wrote it off to stink bugs or something we couldn't quite track down. I thought it was electrical. When we went to disconnect today I found that my extension line that plugs into my camper had fused to The camper receptacle. I pulled them out and replaced them both. Just a word of warning pay attention and find out where the smells are coming from.

That's awful. Stink bugs have been unusually bad this year, but that is much worse!
Good catch before it turned into devastation.

Fairly common. Generally caused by loose connection where wiring is clamped into rig side.

Make sure all the wire contact screws are tight on that receptacle.
Take the cover off your circuit breaker panel and check all the contact screws there too (remove power first).

I have seen several of these problems with the connections. Even one that caused severe damage to the 120 volt systems in the coach. Some of the molded power cord ends do not have good strain relief. After many plug and unplugs, the connections can loosen. I found this out on my own 5th wheel. As mentioned above, check those connections.

A problem reported many times on the MOC forum. Most, if not all, found the wires on the trailer connector not properly tightened at the factory. Loose wires equals resistance. And resistance plus electrical current equals heat. Enough to burn the wiring.

I have read about so many of these I would recommend everyone pulling that trailer connector out and checking wiring tightness just to be safe. I did years ago and mine were tight.

One thing I did when we first got our rig was purchase a 90 degree 50 amp dog bone. It takes a lot of the strain off the connector rather than having the weight of your cable pulling down on the plastic connection point. I bought a Camco dog bone, but this will give you an idea...

You may need to rotate the receptacle on the camper so it hangs downward. Easily done.

I could’nt get a clear view of the white neutral wire, but it seems to have the actual damage. If both the red and black legs are on the same phase, that would overload the neutral wire with the sum of current flowing in the red and black. Checking the voltage across the red and black should yield 240 volts. If not the pedestal is miswired.

We had that happen a couple years ago. Glad it happened at home, when I was prepping for a trip. Yeah, and I replaced the 25' line and the RV recepticle. So weird that one day it works and the next day......fried.

Here's another odor to be aware of. Years ago in an SOB with the bedroom in the front I awoke around 2AM to a strong rotten egg odor. After verifying neither DW nor I had passed gas, I assumed it was coming from the black tank but when I checked the bathroom there was no odor there. It was strongest right in the bedroom. Eventually further investigation located the problem in that the battery was boiling over and gassing off badly. Close call as I would guess that's hydrogen gas and potentially could have ignited explosively.
