And the date code is not a simple month/day/year. You have to decipher their code. And the code format has varied over the years apparently. You can google DEF date code and find multiple sites to explain it. And different sites show at least two different date code formats for Blue DEF.

With EFS card, I buy fuel and DEF at truck stop pumps (big rig lanes out back).
Current DEF price in Strafford, MO Love's is $3.18/gallon; at TA, Strafford it is $3.20.
Similar prices over the road throughout the U.S. - and diesel fuel is discounted far deeper than that found at Flying J.
NOTE: In a recent seven week (6000 Mile) trip, I saved more than @200.00 on diesel fuel purchases. Pricing, freshness of product (high turnover at truckstops), and convenience/safety are considerations for using truck stops and an Electronic Fleet Service card.
Google "TSD Logistics" for more data on their EFS card.
I would not buy DEF from Wal-Mart at $6-8 except in an emergency.

In almost four years full timing we've never used anything but Walmart. First two years and 40K in a Sprinter based Class C and now about 25K in our Ford. Like you we've never had an issue. Pretty simple for Peak Blue DEF

First two Digits 1, and 2 - where made

Digits 3 and 4 is the year plus one , so anything made in 2021 will have 22

Digits 5,6,7 = days remains in the year when manufactured .

The remaining digits are the batch code .

Never seen anything but those on Peak Blue DEF where I have bought it . I got this from calling Peak .

This is the jug of DEF that I bought at Walmart earlier this summer. It has been sitting in my hot garage and I intend to pour it out to kill the weeds on my fence line. The date tag simply reads "06.23.21"...no Captain Midnight secret decoder ring needed!!

Well, you have a good point. They might have a high school kid popping those paper stickers on the jug before they go on the shelf - meaning this is the date it arrived at the store. I tried googling the “date tag” for Walmart DEF and could not find anything definitive on the Walmart site. Lots of technical data but nothing about the manf. date. It seems that the container, labeling and screw on spout went thru a design upgrade maybe couple years ago. The old containers had the “born on date” ( my term not theirs) stamped in black ink on the front. It was a “date” - not a code. In the new label design the date is no longer stamped. I can’t say for certainty what that date tag means. I will continue to use the Walmart DEF however.

Walmart, cheep and the truck hasn't complained. We travel between FL and CA every year. I top off before we leave and carry 2 jugs in the bed to take us across, so nothing old sitting around. TA and Petro only for fuel, save big $$$ with the card.

If the DEF is stored in a cool dry location and away from direct sunlight, it will last a long time.
Running two large Ag tractors and one diesel truck that use DEF and have never had problems.
Sometimes we get hung up on expiry dates, My tractors don't move over the winter months where temps can reach minus 40F. They still operate fine in the spring. Many large farmers buy it by the large drum 210 litres with no problems about age of product.

Until a couple weeks ago, I always bought my DEF from the Ford dealer. Yes, I might have been paying a little more for it than from another source but I knew that they rotated stock frequently. What I have learned is that DEF has a shelf life. That shelf life is shortened by exposure to sunlight and heat. Until my last trip my experience when towing was about 3,500 miles to a tank of DEF. That includes use of some DEF that had not been stored under the best of conditions. On my most recent trip I got 4,700 miles on a tank of DEF. That included 2,900 miles of heavy towing, 400 miles of light towing and the remainder local in town, non-towing mileage. In this most recent case, the DEF was almost empty when I filled it with new DEF from the dealer. As noted in the first sentence of this post, the reason I bought non-dealer DEF was because I needed to top up the tank and the nearest dealer was 50 away. I bought a jug at a truck stop and used a little of it to top the tank. No problems so far. I'll use the rest of that jug and then go back to DEF from the dealer.

Make sure you have them change out the air in your tires for nitrogen while you're filling the def tank with platinum!

I always check the date, an auto parts store near my home was selling blue def that was 4 years old! I buy when I get low and let it run out because I am OCD like that. Life expectancy in the heat is very poor.

DEF breaks NOx down into nitrogen and water. It doesn’t affect how much C02 a Diesel engine emits.

DEF Degrades Fast with heat and exposure to Sunlight. I use an inexpensive gravity DEF tester that I found on amazon to test quality. Always check dates on the box as a minimum. The platinum DEF seems to be much cleaner as it does not turn into flakes (I hear it has one additional thing in it) The added cost of the platinum can be offset by only one emissions repair.
