I doubt they will/can fix it, probably close that section and build a new road around the chasm. Anybody have GPS coords of the location?

Roughly 36:05'31"N by 121:37'07" just south of Big Sur at Rat Creek. The last big slide buried the highway and Caltrans was able build on top of it. This looks like it will take a bridge as routing the road inland isn't practical. It will be interesting to see how Caltrans attacks the problem.

PCH is why California has such high fuel taxes and high registration fees.

They should leave it closed. It's not worth the money or effort to keep fighting a losing battle. Keeping it open is an exercise in vanity, nothing more. JMHO. If I owned property in that area I'd sell now before it gets cut off completely as future slides and closures is just a matter of time. Count on it. If this was the shortest way to get from A to B then perhaps this is a warning sign that I should rethink my activities. Mother Nature, for the win every time.

US-1: One of the greatest drives in the US; it should stay open.

I suspect it's the roads like it that are a big contributor to the cost. Just off the top of my head there are three spots on 101 between Crescent City and Klamath where the road is or has shifted. One of the spots has been under full time repair for at least two years.

Then there is keeping the high mountain passes open:

Couldn't the same could be said for damaged caused by every flood, forest fire, hurricane or tornado?

And what's the deal with beach renourishment? How stupid is it to spend millions of dollars pumping sand back onto the beaches every few years?

We plan our trips out that far also! Start making reservations about a year out! Works for us, had nothing but successful trips with absolutely no problems. Including numerous international trips without our 5th wheel!

I have towed my 41 ft fifth wheel trailer getting on highway 1 in San Luis Obispo then to 101 all the way up to San Francisco then to Willits many times. No snow/ice, clearance, tight curves. Places to stay........Morgan Hill, Petaluma Elks Club are both off 101. Beyond that take a look at this link: https://www.tripsavvy.com/guide-to-r...te-101-2912397
